Turning a 1.6 NA into an ecodiesel?
« on: January 20, 2013, 06:55:32 am »
I know the limitations an NA has as far as putting a turbo on it, but just kicking around ideas for the future, would doing a setup like the ecodiesel has be a good compromise between a full-on turbo/pump setup and non-turbo? Does the eco diesel have the same turbo as the TD's? I know the pump doesn't have the spaceship thing on it but is that the only difference?

The ECO turbo is the smallest of the line. VW didn't even put a BOV on the rig (it does have a wastegate tho).

I'm not sure if the ECO IP has any increase in plunger diameter, I haven't taken mine apart that far.

If you turbo a NA with a little k14, you will probably enjoy added power and still maintain economy, as long as your right foot doesn't get too happy.

VW stopped putting a BOV on TD's in the early 90's. I guess they finally figured that without a throttle plate, you wouldn't get a boost spike on deceleration.

I'm thinking of running a similar setup with a k14 or even a k03. The eco used a smaller plunger than the real TD's, so I figure my 8mm pump will work fine with fuel turned up a bit.
I'm building it on an 11mm block, so I may have to stud it to make it last.

Unless you are going for a balls to the walls power build...

Just slap what you got together :) It will run and be just fine. 8mm, 9mm and 10mm I have run them all with a N/A lid on a turbo diesel motor. With proper settings I could get all three plunger sizes to behave the same fuelling wise.

Whatever you want to put together will be better than a non turbo. Even the most turd like turbo setup will outdo no turbo ecery day of the week.

I have over 9,000 miles on my 1983 1.6 NA MK1 engine since I put it in my '92 ecodiesel a little over five months ago.

I transferred the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, turbo, oil cooler housing with the oil feed for the turbo, oil pan with the oil return line from the turbo, the splash guard for over the cam, the valve cover, cooling hoses, water pump (the MK1 WP was leaking), engine mounts and a few sensors that had different style connectors on them from the MK2 eco engine to the MK1 NA engine. I left NA injection pump on the motor (I think it is 9mm) and kept the 8mm eco IP as a spare. Since the engine was out anyway I put on a new timing belt and tensioner. The only other things that I changed on the engine were cutting the MK 1 passenger side engine mount off, deleting the AC, deleting the power steering pump, and changing the V belts to a single one that powers the WP and alternator.

It runs great and makes a little more power than the eco engine made. I am getting about 51-52MPG with it in the summer / early fall and about 47-48 MPG so far this winter.

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

then bolt some boost on your n/a long block, and be happy..

it WILL NOT harm your engine..

as long as you run it sensibly, and dont leave your foot on the floor for a STEEP 10 mile hill, you will be golden..
