mk1 solid rotors to ventilated ones (GTI)
« on: January 05, 2013, 01:30:53 pm »
I might need to refurbish the front brakes of my 84 Jetta.

They are currently solid rotors,

Can I buy and installed   84 gti, ventilated calipers, rotosr and pads, AND will they bolt in,,,,

thanks

1/2 worn solid pads, or new vented pads, and rotors all you need... same caliper... they just made the pad 1/2 as thick...

The last time I bought pads (for a vented rotor car of this era) they did not ask me what kind of rotors I had. I'm thinking that (at least some) manufacturers may have consolidated the product line and stopped offering 2 of the same pads, the only difference being the thickness of the friction material, and only offer the thinner type (which corresponds to the thicker vented rotors but can be used on both).

Basically, there's no reason not to be using vented rotors, and I would get cross-drilled ones too because they aren't terribly expensive for these cars.

No need to change calipers. Just buy mk1 16v vented rotors, 239x12 iirc and some vented pads.

edit: typo error

Basically just a 239x12 as opposed to 239x20.

no.... why edit it.. now you still gotta fix your post... again... what you removed from mine messes it up..

16v mk1 = 16v rocco = 10.1" requires all kinds of crap...

8v gti/gli.... 9.4" vented rotors...

i use solid on winter car... vented cool off too fast in slushy cold puddles... brakes have to warm up to work... if you have run both on a mk1 winter slush you can feel the differance..

I need to replace the front brakes on my 89 jetta they are currently solid can I do the same thing. From what I have been reading I can. I will be replacing the calipers at the same time. Do I stay with stock of change the whole thing to GTI stuff. I have 13" wheels
