Oil Temp Sending unit (electric)

Where does the oil temp gauge sending unit go? I would like to use an electric one but not sure where to install it. Oil filter flange? Back of cylinder head?
Also does anybody have a p/n for the sending unit and temp gauge?

I put mine in a T fitting in the oil filter flange. No part # for anything as I don't believe these ever came stock. I used an autometer and that is all personal preference.

I had no room at the filter flange so I put mine in the side of the head.  My gauge maxes out at 280° and on a hot day the oil in the head runs about 230°F.  My $.02 I don't think it matters where you put Oil temp gauge sender.  Oil pressure should be at the filter flange.

IMHO the head is a bad spot for temp as it will have residual heat from the coolant and it is thinner there. Also, IMHO pressure is best at the head as it is last in line for oil, so if there is a drop in pressure it will be the first to show you a problem.

Isn't the ideal spot for an oil temp gauge be in the sump?  How about a dip stick sender?

some came factory on a few different cars, they were mounted on the filter flange thing.  sciroccos had them and also alot of cabriolets.  i have cabby gauges in my jetta, volts, oil pressure, and oil temp.

Thanks for the input everybody. I just ordered a autometer gauge #5747 100-250 temp and an adapter #2265 inch thread 1/8-27npt to metric 10mm-1mm pitch.
The guys at summit racing were very helpful. I'll try the oil filter flange location and see  how it works there.
I'll post pictures and results after install.

Actually the 1/8x27 is almost identical to the 10x1. When you get them line up the threads. It usually will screw in at least 3 turns.

I have screwed the npt into the metric hole many times.

Yes you can use 1/8npt in m10, but you will never want to use the m10 in that hole when you are done. The taper screws it up a bit.

Interesting on the oil temp sender. I never have owned a rocco or cabby so I didn't know.

Since 10mm senders are readily available, why mess up a good 10mm thread with a 1/8" NPT sender; yeah, they kinda fit, but they very frequently seep also (like VAG diesels don't have enough leaks already  ).

FWIW some of the VW Sciroccos & others have a large temperature sender (~284 degrees F!) mounted atop the oil filter flange to shut off power to the A/C compressor if the oil temp gets too hot. Haven't personally located any more useful (?) temp sender to occupy that spot, but there it should be possible to find or fab up an adapter that would allow a more standard unit to be mounted there. IMO that's a terrible spot for pressure monitoring... way too optimistic.

why a t or end of head bad... oil flow... pocket of oil thats not flowing is not accurate...

you can t a pressure gauge/sensor, oil feed to turbo.. but temp sensor has to be in the flow..

any 75-87 aluminum neck temp sensor works vdo temp gauges.. glowplug/temp gauge... so spare 1.5/1.6 diesel neck/heads got 2
