But there's a turbo??????  :?  :?:
I saw the car this weekend and then drove it the following day.  Here's what I saw that was wrong with the car....
K's 267 000
t-belt should be done soon.
Front end alinment - result of new front struts
clutch(supposedly new) has a lot of play at the top 1/3
Fuel line leaking at the IP
Air in one of the plastic fuel lies come from/to the fuel filter (engine bay)
PWR steering screams a bit on full rotate each way.
Any idea what something like this is worth?  Also is there any thing I should pay close attention to???
Thanks
Greg

They are turbocharged. It's a 1.9L IDI turbo.A TDI is also a turbo, but uses direct injection.

That car should have a self adjusting clutch cable,so there should be very little freeplay.Either the clutch is beat,or maybe somebody replaced it with an adjustable cable, and it's not adjusted correctly.

The plastic lines can be fixed,it's probably sucking air in there.

The PS pump is probably toast. These car tend to rust out the PS line from the pump to rack, and the little feed lines on the rack itself. If it has been run dry (most do),it damages the pump.It may also be low on fluid.Either way it may need the leaks fixed, and a new pump. For what it's worth, just get a used manual rack and lose the PS.

Hard to put a price on it without seeing the condition of the whole car,but they usually go for $2000-6000 depending on condition.

Thanks wyldman,
Is it a big job to switch to manual steering.  That's the way it is in my 91 and honestly...I like it.  More room less to fix etc. etc.
Regarding the fuel leak at the IP it seems to be at the larger nut not the smaller one closest to the side of the IP.  It's hard to get a wrench on there between the metal lines.  I read else where here that there are crush washers in there.  Are there springs or anything to be concerned with if retorquing it doesn't work and I have to back it all the way off??

The other thing is how do you determine if the turbo is working?  There is no boost gauge.  There is a noticable air sound (hissss) when you drive the car and it's not window noise.  It is faster than my 91 w/1.6n/a but I thought for a turbo there would be evidence that it was working like a bit of a kick at a certain RPM etc...   Further explanation is very much appreciated.
I'm leaning towards getting this car and am kind of excited about the potential of learning turbos.  That and haveing two VW's so I can park my brick on a 91 Pathfinder SE-V6
Anybody have a similar engine set up on SVO?

Thanks guys.
Out.

Not hard to swap in a manual steering rack. The steering will be slightly heavier than your 91,as it's a bigger heavier car,but it still works fine.

The turbo should have a faint "whooooosh" sounds as you accelerate hard. You will have to put you foot into it pretty good. It's kinda hard to hear on a high mileage stock engine,as they don't boost much.Once you turn up the fuel, and adjust the wastegate to control boost, then you hear (and feel) it.

Hi Greg,

I run my '96 Jetta on SVO, and will soon be converting my father in law's 94 to SVO as well. You can do a real slick job on these, the lines can be run under the plastic inside rocker cover.

I have some pics on my site, although I haven't posted all of them (sorry).  FWIW, on my father in law's car, I'll be running the lines on the driver's side, and they'll exit to the engine compartment through the rubber plugs near the pedal cluster. No cutting!
