Could some of you guys that are also into gassers tell me what a 60k mileage 96 vr6 engine and wiring harness is worth?

around here, i see them selling for 6-1200 bucks...

ive seen them as low as 150 for a whole running engine and harness, no ecu or anything else.

60k miles, thats just a BABY....

probably never had chains, and it probably needs them..

96, thats an obd2 coil pack engine, right? or still dizzy?

Needing chains at 60k? Hubby's old '95 VR is still running the original chains at 350k+ as far as we're aware. Never any records for changing them, he got the car at 198k and never changed them before he sold it at 225k, and we know the owner now and they've not been done and its at over 350k on it. Now, guides and such were replaced, but the chains themselves, nope.

Reason I ask I can get 96 wagon with said engine bum trans for 1800 brought to my house. Im trying to decide if its a worthwhile car for a swap. Since Im removing the ecu and such would it be a hassel that it has abs and airbags with ecu no longer there? I hear that you might need different parts to put a 5speed tranny into a car with abs.

you guys got VERY LUCKY then... ive never heard of a VR NOT NEEDING its chains changed...

The chains aren't so much the problem as the guides and tensioners. Hubby drove that Passat from MD to NC with the chains slapping because of failing guides and tensioners  Replaced them and all was well.

And yes, '96 should be OBDII. That's when the switch was made. Here in NC, '96+ cars get emissions tested (OBDII reading). Pre-'96 do not since they aren't OBDII. But early 90's OBDI was pretty sweet. Still could get codes and all, but, at least here, no emissions testing. That's about the only thing I miss about that car...otherwise it was a black hole for money. Engine was great though...rest of the car not so much. That was an expensive 4 years of ownership for sure.
