What are we looking at? It doesn't look like clutch material to me.

Yeah that's what it ended up being.
Still not 100% happy with the shifts.
Gonna put an nv3500 5 speed in it when I get one.

6.2 diesel plus 5 speed manual could equal 30 mpg highway

Maybe in a Corvette....
NV3500 is kinda weak for a 6.2, but I guess you can probably get 10 of them for the price of a 4500.

Do you have a diesel governor in it?
What's wrong with the shift feel?

It's the original 700r4, so it has the diesel governor. It started having real high line pressure and delaying the 1-2, and when it finally shifted it banged. So I pulled the valve body and checked for a stickin tv valve.. Valve wasn't stickin, but the photo from the original post is what I found just above the tv. So I thought that was it. Put it all back together and now when cold, it shifts just right; second by about 5 mph and third around 20. Soon as the cold start drops off it holds first till 15-20 no matter what. Doesn't bang as bad (put a spring under the second accumulator) but still shifts real late. How long till a 230k mile 1989 700r4 craps out you know? So I'm hoping to stick a five speed in it, but getting the nv3500 is not easy in VA evidently

That is a lot of miles.
Tried slacking the TV cable  adjuster a tooth or two?
Also  sometimes the gov gear apple cores  on those, probably worth a peek in there first.

PS. I'm starting to want a 700 instead of the 400 behind my 6.2.

i WOULD NOT use a NV3550 behind a 6.2d

and theres no way you will ever see 30mpg from a 6.2 in any truck..

I don't  know if I would either.. But the nv3500 is the one I was speaking of. The truck got 24.3 going back forth on a 7 mile journey for 31 gallons, with the original, 230k 700r4 behind that 6.2.

Also, the nv3500 came behind the 4.3l v6 which made similar hp/trq and the behind the 5.0 v8 which beat out the 6.2 on both.

Wasn't until the 6.5 turbo that that they went to the nv4500

I never have seen a nv3500 have a failure death. I have seen several of them and even several 4500 with syncros that were out between 2nd and 3rd. If you slowed your shift it would be fine, but never have I seen on leave someone stranded. I am not saying it would be a good or bad choice for the 6.2 but I think it is a better unit than you give it credit for.
