Vacuum pump upgrade
« on: October 16, 2012, 12:30:09 am »
I grabbed a vane pump from a 83 Rabbit, in the junkyard today. I'm guessing this wasn't the original pump.

I plan on putting this into my 81, but is it safe to just cap the breather port on the block or should I run a tee from the block to the pump, then to the booster? My rotary pump had 2 ports but the vane pump only has 1, and is only connected to the booster.

I notice the later 90s TDIs don't vent the block.

i think 83 was the switch over year, my 83 had the vane pump.  run the port on the vacuum pump to the booster, the opening in the block you can cap off, or what i recommened is to run a hose from it and T it into the valve cover breather, this solved blow by issues on my 83 rabbit.

Just be sure you understand what Trev was saying.  Tee the block port into the crank vent, not the hose from the vac pump to booster.

that was how the factory hose was routed..
