I found a westy gasser mkI cluster with a tach and the connecttor is the same as the caddy cluster. If I plug the gasser cluster into the (diesel) caddy connector, will anything get fried? I know the tach won't work w/o additional work, also glow plug light is missing but should temp and fuel gauge work?
How should I go about it so it's the least amount of work and end up with a working tach?
mk2 cluster no fit in mk1 dash...
they physically fit, but there is nothing to mount it to..
the only piece holding my mk2 cluster into my mk1, was the gauge cluster trim bezel..
I was given this cluster and was told it's from a GTI and that it would fit into my Caddy. Can anyone verify that it is from a GTI and if so what year? The connector on the back is neither CE1 or CE2 nor Westy

no dude, this is NOT a mk1 cluster..
whoever told you that, was wrong...
thats a mk2 rocco/mk2 GTI cluster...
they dont work in a rabbit..

That's not the cluster. The cluster I just got came from a gasser Rabbit made in Westmoreland PA and has neither a CE1 nor CEII connector I/F.

Rabbits didnt have CE1 or CE2.. they had rabbit wiring.. it was PRE-CENTRAL ELECTRIC.. the american rabbits had their own wiring system.. Jettas of the same year, had CE1.. believe roccos did as well..

Were there German Rabbits of the same year as American Rabbits? And they have different wiring? That's crazy! Why did they do that?
in america in 1979 diesels were made in germany and gassers were made in westmoreland, i think they had the same wiring harness tho. 81 and up the westmoreland cars had their own harness, i think it was because they used american made parts in the rabbits, so they had an american wiring harness with american made switches.

Yes the rabbit tach cluster is almost identical from behind, you'll actually want to swap the center section and membrane from ur current cluster over to the tach cluster to retain the glow plug light

Thanks!
Here's pics of the gasser cluster. What are the red white blue wires on the speedo for? They're not on the diesel cluster.

Honestly I'm not sure, it's some type of speed sensor I'm not sure if it was for cruise control or the shift light or both or what

I have the cluster apart and traced the red wire to the OSX LED so it must be a counter/ switch in the speedo to tell you when to change the oxygen sensor.
As for using this Rabbit gasser tach in a diesel, what are you triggering it with?

its the o2 sensor counter..
its integrated into the speedo on these cars..
no little black box like on mk2 cars..
should be able to hook up the tach with a magnetic pickup, and drive it..
