Can a 5 speed out of a gas 1.7 VW Jetta or Rabbit be used on a 1.6 diesel? I have two Jettas both with 5 speeds that are shot. I can easily find a 5 speed out of a gas VW, but finding one out of a diesel is harder. I have an 83 Rabbit with a 5 speed and it looks like the tranny would work, but didn't want to go to the work if it would bolt up. Thanks,

you didnt post the trans code..
on the BOTTOM of the bell housing, there is a flat pad, with 2 or 3 letters, and like 6 or 7 numbers..
the first 2 or 3 letters will be the trans code..
lots of rabbit (minus GTI) trannies were long ratio, and suitable for diesels..
the trans will physically bolt to the engine, but the ratios ma be VERY DIFFERENT.. you might go from cruising at 2400 revs @ 60mph, to 3000 revs @ 60mph..
Yeah, check the codes, then see what you've got to work with;
http://www.scirocco.org/ has a great chart that everyone on here uses for figuring out what's what with an 020. Link for it (GEARS) is near bottom of page, in small letters, but worth the effort to find!
Remember, a good R&P is the most important. If you've got a 3.67 R&P, you're set. Even if the 5th isn't as high as you want it, you can always do a 5th gear swap to a .75 or even a .71 later on if you feel you need it, but if you're stuck with a 3.94 R&P, your motor will not be happy with you, 'cause there's no higher 5th gear swap available than a .71
Case in point, I am re-engining an '81 Rabbit Convertible (Cabriolet) that came from Osnabruck with an FF transmission- perfekt for a diesel.
Most gas and diesel engines had the same transmission options the real exceptions are 16v, gti, gli, and scirocco stuff

the best diesel trans vw made, never came behind a diesel! lol..
the ACN lineup of trannies, AFAIK, was never offered behind a diesel..
Im running the oddball ACH with the same gearing as the ACN lineup too bad the final drive isnt the same. However It seems to be better than the AGS that I had prior, it had been opened up at one point cause when I picked it up it had the "squished out" sealant around the main body and fith gear housing... maybe the PO did a 5th gear swap

Good stuff; I'm in the process of putting a diesel into my little bro's FN-equipped cabrio myself
