FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer ebay, $150 starting
« on: September 25, 2012, 11:35:02 am »
I made this thing a couple years ago for long distance trips on VO, and its time to sell it.  Its a custom made dual parts bin bolted to what was originally a motorcycle trailer, and between the parts bins is a 50 gallon boat tank.

the trailer is rated up to 800 lbs of stuff, and the idea was to load it up with VO, and have yourself a couple thousand miles of range towed behind you and refill your tank from the trailer on the road.  I made several road trips without stopping for fuel at all, which was a real pleasure.  The bins allow you to carry spare parts and tools, or camping equipment is what I used them for.

It has an extremely low tongue weight, under 50 lbs id estimate.  The hitch is a 1-7/8 ball.  Additionally, it also has a spare tire holder on the front for the car, as well as its own spare tire mounted on the side, as well as a nifty spring loaded stand for static storage.  The whole thing is painted black, and the parts bins are lockable, BUT i haven't found the key for them anywhere, so the tumblers might have to be replaced.  (the bins are unlocked)

This is a weird item, but well built and pretty useful for what it was intended for.  Im looking to get 800 dollars for it.  let me know if you have any questions

Some pics-  A little dusty here, construction is aluminum, and the frame is steel.  tank is plastic

Thanks!

NOTE:  Plate says MO, but the trailer is located in Providence RI.
also important to note, this trailer MUST be towed empty and clean across international borders, IE Canada or Mexico, or you will be in for some fun explaining yourself.  Ask me how I know.  ;D

The 50 gallon tank has two large ports at either end, for cleaning, filling, and maintenance.  I have large common pipe plugs in them with a wingnut, but there are a lot of cap options for something like this depending on what you might want to do.

Also, the construction of the trailer is that the parts bin section is designed to act as a strap to hold down the tank, so by unbolting the parts bin and lifting up, the tank can come completely free, meaning you could use that space for something else, or change your tank setup.  (the plastic tank is unbaffled, I wanted plastic so it wouldn't polymerize on the metal, but you can feel sloshing when its half full)

In the configuration you see here,  the added range for a 1.6D was about 2000 miles, and the added range on my old MB was about 1400 miles

Nice but too far away.  I could use the capacity to store and transport and just have clean oil about the place.  I think I would be painting the back with white paint.  EDIT:  Lil Veggie Extender though.  in black letters with the white for reflection.  You could just cut the letters out of tacky paper and paint the white right over them.  Peel them off and voila.  Instant letters white on black.

this is definitely a good idea.  I considered doing something similar a few times, and just never got around to it.  The black paint was to ensure that the tank would absorb heat from the sun via the metal of the trailer bins as well, but it definitely makes the thing hard to see at night.  There are marker lamps though, on the fenders and brake lamps.

I am also open to offers.  Too far away you could have a forum member who is making a trip tow it out to you.   ;D
