It should just be an AAZ engine (IDI 1.9L). Cool variant by the way. I wish we'd gotten them in the states

Nope, it's a 1.9 ecodiesel. Unwelt/umwelt (I've seen both spellings) means environment, FWIW.

Hi Mike
Thanks for the comments and rapid reply :wink:
:wink: My Golf was previously standard, but i have added GTI arches, brakes, alloy wheels etc . . .
I also wish we could of had these models in the the UK, but the germans must have kept the best for themselves

Get yourself a 1.9TD injection pump and turbo, and take off the cat. Bam, you essentially just knocked the "unwelt" off of your engine's description.
Alternately, you've got a Mk3. What I would do, if I were in your situation, would be to find a Mk3 Golf or Vento (don't know if you had the Vento in TDI, but we had them (well, OK, VW sold them as Jettas) in TDIs) TDI that has been wrecked, buy it, and do a TDI swap.

I've got a 1993 Canadian Passat Umwelt. Differences I've seen are:
Pump doesn't have an LDA;
Single stage injector's instead of the taller dual stage injectors;
Turbo doesn't seem to have any adjustability.
Basicly, it's a neutered 1.9TD. Mileage seems lower (1000 km to tank hwy MAX), and power and tunability is way down.

I saw a couple Golf wagons while I was in the UK recentlt - I agree, I wish they had imported them; I'm sure they would have sold, especially in the TD variant.

What's the difference between a golf wagon and a jetta wagon? I thought they were all the same forward of the front seats, and only the back being different: hatchback (GTI), four door hatchback (golf), sedan (jetta), 2 door sedan (jetta coupe) or 4 door wagon (sold in the US as a jetta wagon)
Jetta wagons were breifly available with the TDI here....

From what I could see, the Golf is a little more upright and wider at the roof.
I never saw any Jetta (Bora) wagons while I was there - I get the impression that the Golf was the only one offered in the Estate format.
Have you ever seen a MKIII Jetta Wagon in the states? I've never heard of such a beast.
