Ive heard this a few times and I believe it from my experiences the older 020 s were much better and stronger the newer they got especially mkiii was when they started to fail a lot. I've seen tons of mkiii cars with bad trans. Now no matter if it's older or newer they are no good for making lots of power but for normal driving the older ones seem to last as well as anything else. I wonder tho if the problem with the later cars had more to do with how the car weighed almost 1000lbs more than the rabbit it was intended for, and also had nearly twice the power
the 4 speeds are the toughest.. they DO NOT die...
run them dry even.. they dont die.
In Denver I ran some 4 and 5 speed 1.6NAs Rabbit Pickups and the 4spds got overall better fuel milage in town and I guess highway but no ones was driving a lot of hwy miles with those anyway except back in the day when speed limit was 55MPH

the 4spd cars DID get better economy..
its no secret..
there is one less shift.. get it to 4th gear and leave it there.
no shifting out of 5th gear for hills, cause its not there!
well, this is speaking of the GC code trannies..
my 4A trans was WAY TOO LONG GEARED..
it was like driving a 5spd with a blown up 4th gear!

haha yep i have the tall 4 speed, same as 4a but .71 instead of a .70 4th and up steep grades its a struggle to find the right gear
