Help me out with a measuring tape!
« on: August 28, 2012, 04:36:08 pm »
Slightly on the wrong sub-forum, but bear with me...

Can you please measure something from your Golf/Jetta/GTI mk2 for me?

I need to know how much clearance the bonnet/hood locking mechanism needs vertically, when the hood is closed.

...I need to know exactly how much vertical room the lock system takes, in order to fit my intercooler correctly.
In other words, hos much does the lock and its ancillaries protrude out of the radiator support frame.
I can't measure it myself since my hood and lock etc. are at another location.

Thank you so much!

Sorry, life got into the way...2" approx from the core support top to the bottom where the release cable attaches.

Thanks!  :)

How about in the middle, the center spring fitted onto the hood that goes through the hole in the lock unit in the radiator support?

I'm making progress but it's so slow when there's so much custom work to be done...

As far as I can tell it doesn't stick down any further than where the release cable attaches. this is the best photo I have. The latch stuff is so far up that if you wanted good flow to the IC I don't think you will be up there.

the center support is more in the way than the hood latch..

there is a vertcal support in the core support.. it attaches under the bumper.

that will be more in the way than the latch and cable..

i had to trim the hell out of my center support.

If you were to run thicker horizontal supports I think one could do away with the vertical supporst and still have a solid cross member.

This is how I'm mounting my I/C:

The part that is most in the way is exactly the lock mechanism.

I may be able to dodge the problem by fitting the core slightly more back. Ideally I don't want to do that, but there just might be enough room after all.

Can someone confirm how much the hood spring/pin protrudes below the lock unit in the rad support?

-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------

One more thing; see the brackets I have marked up:

Is it so that these are unnecessary with the '90-'91 big bumper?
I assume these brackets are for mounting the lower front skirt on the small bumper Golf/Jetta.

OK to just cut them off?

I have no clue on those things you want to cut off. I will see on the spring pin. Remember though it may go further than I measure when you slam the hood. Give it some extra room. I will let you know soon.

The spring part doesn't stick down through the lock part any further than the latch release. The "hook" that you have to push back when you pull the release to get the hood up sticks down about 2.25" from the top of my core support.

There is a spot that is on the core support in the middle that is cut out of the center. It looks like this ^ only approx. 4" wide. At the bottom corners on the left and right of this ^ shape is where the lowest point of the hood attachment stuff comes down to.

idk what those tabs are for.. they are not for mounting the duck bill/lower spoiler tho..

the duck bill mounts to the actual bodywork, not the core support..

i believe those are for mounting the lower engine cover (basically a plastic skid plate that covers the bottom of the engine bay)

either way, i dont remember my 92 having those brackets, or them being used for anything..

These brackets are indeed for mounting the lower front skirt. Checked and confirmed.

Not for the front spoiler, for the metal front skirt that the front spoiler bolts onto.

...So I will cut them up and also completely redo the lower rad support.
Next week, I can't wait :)
