Diesel Engine 1.6TD wont start......help!!!
« on: August 22, 2012, 01:32:04 pm »
Howdy peeps, long time since i've been on here, but i've been helping a mate fit his 1.6td into his mk1 caddy, and removing his 1.9 AAZ lump.

Anyway, long story short, the engine has been sat for over 4 or 5 years, laying on its back on a pallet, but inside a shed. When the engine was stood upright, it pissed oil from the turbo inlet and exhaust outlet, im guessing its just worked its way thru everything.

I've also renewed the cambelt, as obv it would need doing, flywheel to TDC, pump with pin in and cam plate tool in end of camshaft. turned it over lots by hand, all marks line up every time.

So we fitted the engine, wired her up, and started cranking.

Basically we couldnt get any fuel into the pump on its own, so turned ignition on, cracked inlet and outlet pipes on the pump, and used compressed air to force diesel up tp the pump, sure enuf, feul came pissing out the inlet to the pump, so nipped this up, and kept pressurizing tank, then fuel came out of the outlet, so nipped this up.

Also then cracked the 4 injector pipes, and no matter how much cranking and pressurising to help it, couldnt get fuel outta these, so we decided to tow it.....

Hooked it up behind my vr6, and dragged her about, fuel was squirting lots out of all 4 injectors, so nipped these up, and carried on draggin it about. now with the ignition on, and in gear, the caddy fired up, smoke out the exhaust, and turbo whistling, however, it was only "running" when my vr was pulling, as soon as i slowed down it stopped. qouldnt tick over, wont restart, so it'll only run when forced i.e being towed....

Could the problem be the pump seals all being dry internally, and leaving it for a few days to soak in diesel would help, as im guessing its not getting fuel properly. as even when "forced running" it wouldnt rev.

Can ya help us, as the poor bugger is caddy less and car less until we get it sorted......

Are you sure that you have the pump timed properly? mk1 pulleys can easily be timed 180 out. How many mm of advance are you running?

2 holes on pump gear pin fit... one is 180 off.. there should be a indent/cut out on pump gear that points close to pump mount pointer/cut out..

Also, ATF soaking would help the seals if they are dry. Give it a shot if the diesel doesn't work for you.

be careful with how long you let that ATF sit though. I have had it START a leak on occasion from sitting too long.
