Bought a 93 Passat Wagon...

...for a diesel conversion. My question is..

I have a 1.6TD engine that runs great at the moment, would it be worth swapping it into the heavier car? Or should I just get an AAZ to drop in? Also, will the 2.0L manual gasser tranny be fine to run with either of those engines?

i have a great running 1.6td in mine... no mods what so ever... but drag racing 2 mk1 jetta 1.6td from madison wis back to ohio it would kill the other one.. ive gotten stopped at 79mph with over 1000lbs of flesh, fully loaded back... bumper like 1" off ground soo much weight... got a warning..

ive also transported 90+ gal of bio in the back for 250ish miles multi times where its uphill 50-75% of way home with no issues.. over speed limit...

thats all with a 85 golf 020 diesel tranny...

sadly i do not know the rpm of a passat 02a in 5th gear at speed.. im thinking its close to 3k around 70mph though.. so should work.. much less then 3k at speed it will be off peak torque and slow down on hills and such IMO..

if your keeping the ac.. the mk1/mk2 compressor hooks up directly to the 16v ac lines.. if vr6.. no idea what will work.. only converted 2 16v ones..

my pump top sprung a leak.. so when i put it back on road (18 mo ago the rf brakes seized up and well it sits... with insurance/plates waiting fo rthe day i need to cart more then 1 passenger).. have not needed it in a while.. its time for timming belt.. built it originaly in 02.. so due to age and th e100k ive put on it its time.. ill do a gov mod.. and need to add a intercooler to it too.. and plug off the intake sneeze valve.. should be a bit more exciting then...

saw float unit post... you need to double check the rumor.. but a b4 wagon tdi supposedly fits the b3 tank..

also when you say 2.0 tranny.. you mean the 02a (stock passat) or a 020?? 020 requires work to make it fit the body...

I live in Canada so the 1.9 AAZs are not hard to come by. I'll likely just sell the Golf and get an AAZ.. found one with tranny and anything else I need for $600, whole AAZ cars that need work for $800.. bought one today atleast.

AAZ over 1.6TD every time my friend. There is a reason they were the next gen motor. Bigger displacement, and way more power potential out of the box.

AAZ's are everywhere in Vancouver. Very easy to find.

I know of the infamous crank sprocket slippage... is there an easy way to fix it 'before' it happens?

AAZ will likely be 020 trans..

you should stay with the 02A off the 16v, or an AAZ 02A if you can..

020 is NOT a bolt-in trans for a B3

Talk to crsmp5 he has the solution to putting 020 into a passat.

if you can 02a id do that 1st... if 020... yes it can be done.. but not simple... gotta cut the drivers side bottom off of frame rail at a point.. aong with inner steel fender section... 02a is shorter then 020..

then the shiftube needs cut and a Z added to it as the shifter sits higher and more reward then a mk2/mk3...

then making mount on rack for shifter parts to bolt on...

Replace it with a 1Z or AHU TDI crank sprocket. You have to file a flat spot somewhere (anywhere) on the crank nose, so it's a press fit. I did mine at home, take your time and take the flat spot down slowly, until it just feels like it wants to fit, but doesn't slide on. Torquing the bolt will force it into place snugly. I used a dremel to take it down most of the way, then hand filed until I got the fit.

Awesome, the tranny on the 16v is mint. Shifts real nice, so I'll just keep it.
