Hey guys! I'm very new to this forum, but I hope you can help me out.... I'm looking at a '91 jetta ECOdiesel with a manual trans. The seller claims that fifth gear just went out on the car. I'm really interested in this car since it's listed at such a low price and the seller just wants to get rid of it.
Here's my questions:
1. If I end up getting the car, would it be alright driving with just the 4 gears for a while?
2. Would the diesel still be efficient in 4th gear at 65mph?
3. Do these earlier jetta diesels have 020 transmissions?
4. If they do, does the diesel engine need a certain trans with the correct gear ratios in order to drive efficiently?
I'm really curious because I have a spare 020 from my Scirocco 16v that was wrecked. I believe the code on the trans I have is a 2Y. Would this be a good option for a ECOdiesel? The only problem I could see is a really high rpm 5th gear and maybe different size flanges for the CV joints.
Any information will help! Thanks in advance!!!!
Zach
Your 2Y code would be slightly better than the AVX in the eco, but not much. You are wanting an ACN or that series of trans. Another one that is OK is the AGS or 7A. You want to avoid the close ratio trans that are available. Many debate this, so it is all relative to the driving and car you have or like. If the 2Y has 100mm then you would have to swap parts or CV...you want to swap CV.

Thanks for the reply! Do you know hard it would be to swap the flanges? I believe everything on the front of my scirocco is still good. Could I just use my Scirocco's CV shafts or could I swap the knuckles to the jetta?

Yeah, I usually use brokevw's website or rabbitpages for info the 020. I got that covered
I had a 2Y in my Scirocco 16v that I believe came out of a 88 GTI 16v. I'm wondering if the gear ratio's would be good for the diesel though. Damac said his was an ACN, which the gear ratios from an ACN and 2Y have relatively close gear ratio's, but the 2Y will make the diesel's rpm's run a little higher, which may not be a bad thing being that it's a 4cyl. turbo diesel...
Here's a link to a site that has the gear ratios: click me
the ACN, and 2Y are worlds apart.. the 2Y is way close ratio. i believe a .91 5th gear. thats WAY LOW. 3000 revs @ 60 mph..
the ACN turns 2450 revs @ 60
thats a pretty BIG difference if you ask me..
Well yes, I meant relatively close except 5th gear....lol. It made my scirocco rev high on the interstate, I couldn't imagine what a diesel would sound like all wound out. I figured I would at least have to swap out the 5th gear.
if fifth gear is bad I have one Im selling would be perfect in an ecodiesel.
