Transmission gearing question - - 1991 Jetta N/A with A/C
« on: July 26, 2012, 07:20:02 pm »
...the car has a AWY 020, I believe: 3.94 R&P, 3.46(1), 1.94(2), 1.44(3), 1.13(4), and .89(5).    Needs a clutch badly, so I'd like to do a 0.71(5) swap at the same time to cut down on the freeway thrash.    I understand that as a N/A it won't be able to pull ANY hills, etc.   Will any 0.71(5) fit, or what should I look for?

thanks

Look for a new tranny. If you swap in a .71 or even a .75 you won't be able to downshift on the highway when you get to a hill. Technically you could, but you'd be screaming the engine and not really have any useful power. The AWY is a great tranny if all you do is city driving, but that's about it. Many gasser trannys have good ratios for a diesel. Check out www.scirocco.org/gears

I'm not sure of the code, but I have a gasser trans with the 3.667 final with a .75 5th that is just fine.  Mind you I don't have any major hills here, but it does just fine with the hill that are around here.  (1.6 na)
99' 1.9 1Z Tdi, hybrid pump -1.9 housing & rover internals, 2052 wastegate turbo,.25 hflox nozzles, SDI intake, CTN tranny
