1.9 SDI / NA ALH ?
« on: July 13, 2012, 09:24:15 pm »
Has anyone out there made a non-turbo M-TDI such as the SDI engine sold overseas? I am happy with the power of the 1.6 in my 1986 Golf, and love the shear simplicity of natural aspiration, but I would really love to have direct injection, hydraulic lifters, a bit more torque, and an engine that's not slap wore out and 25+ years old.
My thinking is that because of the relatively mild increase in power that an "M-SDI" would have, I would be able to use my stock clutch, and 5 speed transmission with no issue other than the gearing being be a bit short. Are there any reasons why this can't be done? Also are there any readily available non-turbo manifolds that would bolt up to the ALH?

Any input would be appreciated
Thanks!

I would suggest using the 1Z/AHU as it is a bolt in affair to mk1-m2-mk3. Everything as far as bolt holes on the block are the same. Stock transmission could be used, blah blah.

However the simplicity of a non turbo is, there is nothing simplistic about a Mechanical TDI in North America. lol Unless you buy a $1-1500 pre calibrated, pre built pump.

Also.. With all the effort put forward, why not just run stock boost on a TDI with the turbo in place? Stock power and boost will not harm anything, and your stock transmission and axles will still be usable.

That's helpful, I hadn't realized the ALH had different mounting points. It looks like the only real disadvantage with the earlier TDIs is that they seam to be quite a bit harder to come by in the US. As far as the pump goes, I found this one http://www.hansdieselparts.com/RebuiltMTDIPump.htm for under $600 - I'm not sure if that's a get what you pay for type thing or not.

I'm sorry to say. But that man is the biggest rip off. Just search google about prothe.

There is no way possible he could build that pump to sell for that price. impossible.

I planned on building a mSDI. I ended up with a non turbo AAZ engine instead. It got a P&P head, lightened flywheel, Giles pump, proper intake from Europe (1Y? engine code) and a GTI header. I am very impressed with the power. It would be awesome to have a direct injection engine like you said. Giles actually owes me a favor, so once I find an engine and a body mSDI here I come!
