So I'm thinking this is a head gasket problem. 1.6 td is builing enough pressure in the cooling system that even stone cold removing the expansion bottle lid results in lots of coolant and compressed air shooting out the overflow when the seal is released. Car runs well, has great fuel economy and starts great. The only other problem is a huge appetite for oil. Does this sound like a head gasket problem?

could be the head gasket for the coolant problem. For oil loss could be leaking out somewhere, or could be bad rings. Is there any oil in the coolant?
no oil in coolant and Bentley lists head gasket as possible cause for oil consumption so?
It is using coolant, or having overheating problems?
I've also heard that valve guides on these engines can leak oil into the cylinders. The turbo could also be using oil.
Lost some coolant and overheated as a result when it got real warm out last week. I was pushing it hard at the time though. Stopped and let it cool off, replentished lost coolant, and took it easier and it seemed fine.
Every time I go to check the coolant it looses about a litre when the cap is opened and it depressurizes even cold.
Anyone else experience this?
