im too scared to mess with it, do i keep the bits mentioned on the shelf for later, or sell them to somebody on the forum and just buy another setup?

how are the brazilian heads ready to go for less than $600 i see for sale work?

i also forgot to ask what everybody thinks about evans waterless coolant?  i tend to check things at every gass fillup because of all the issues i have had with these old cars.  so if the low coolant sensor didn't work hopefully i would catch it if i started burning it.  surely not having to deal with pressure would extend the life of a coolant hose?

I don't know anything about it, but I believe a veteran member used it on his mtdi. You may want to search for threads by "jimfoo" and try pm'ing him although I don't think he comes here anymore.

Yes, jimfoo used it. I think he was a big fan of it as well, but it's been a while

Could a crack in that location lead to coolant leaking into the cylinder?  I just pulled my head and found a crack in the same place and am trying to decide on a course of action. I suspected a head gasket, but am now afraid that this might be the root of the problem.   Thanks.

See in this situation, unless the head was pressure checked first, I wouldn't use it again.
I'd also see if that rod is bent.  if it is, the head is cracked to coolant for sure.

I did a HG on one of these that had that same crack and it lasted a couple thousand miles and then started eating coolant and barfing it out the bottle. I wouldn't waste my time with that head.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Brett would weld that sucker up and run it.. wouldnt matter if it leaked a little coolant, he dumps quarts of oil out of his coolant expansion tank when crack bunny runs!
