Intermediate shaft bearing Removal
« on: June 27, 2012, 09:01:04 pm »
Pulled apart an engine today that I'm putting in a car to sell to my friend to replace all the seals and after i pulled the t-belt i realized the shaft had abnormal play i pulled it and the bearing seems like its worn out of round. What could've caused it? Whats the best way to pull and press in a new one? Inner one seemed good no play in it and no chipping or cracks.

too tight of a timing belt caused it, most likely.. or the engine has a million miles..

get BOTH inner and outter bearings replaced.. there are a few guys on here with tools to do it..

Rdezsofi (over on the vortex, and VWdieselparts) has a VERY NICE bearing puller/installer. its even for sale, somewhat..

Somewhere on here in the last 3 years is a thread about grinding a 1" pipe cap and using it for a mandrel.  I did that on my outer and it worked fine.

I tapped the old outer bearing out with a punch. might try the pipe end cap trick if I can find someone with a bench grinder. I'm only going to replace the outer because the inner has zero play and is smooth as silk.
