Usually people replace their cats with a test pipe and sell them whole, that said I don't agree with removing cats and have no idea if an old vw diesel cat is worth anything, the bmw units from the 80's are worth a couple hundred dollars.

As much as I like cats, I was hoping for a different post when I saw this thread title.

i think you HAVE to sell them whole.. they dont have prices for just the matrix. they pay you for the matrix, the shell, and the steel wool inside as well..

ive never been able to find a yard to take my big bucket of powdered cats...

The dust is very toxic.  Not only is it doubtful that they will pay you for it, it is very probable they will fine you for the hazardous waste disposal.

Your car will stop running when you convert to veg?

doesnt VEG make MORE emissions than fuel? being that veg oil is NOT meant to be used as a fuel?!

It depends how you look at it.

Veg oil is produced without drilling, refining, or bombing, and much less tankering so if you factor that in, it's quite a bit cleaner.

Everything I've seen where somebody wen to an emission test and did back to back tests, emissions are within 2% at any given speed/load.

Diesel engines were originally designed to run on veg oils, it's not that different if you look at flash points energy content, etc. diesel has a better additive/preservative package, and makes your nose burn a hair more if you sniff the tailpipe.

You  may see some veg cars blowing a fat cloud of crap as they go down the road, but they are usually in poor condition, and run like crap on diesel too.

If you have a wore out VE pump, the thicker VO may bring the advance curve back in spec, and burn a hair cleaner, as would adding some 30W to your dino diesel.

Sell it on EBAY.

This is what I do with cats that come off cars for... replacement purposes.

1. Gut the cat and put the contents in a ziploc bag.
2. Scrap the exterior of the cat along with your normal steel scrap (if you save that sort of stuff, I do).
3. Weigh it.
4. List it on ebay, be sure to describe the weight accurately and mention the type of vehicle it came from. Don't be too specific, because of item 5, Just say it was from a VW (or whatever) approximately 1980s vintage.
5. It's actually illegal, on the federal level, to sell used catalytic converters for the purpose of installing them on a car, so be sure to mention that you're selling the honeycomb contents of the cat for the sole purpose of recycling/precious metals recovery and not for auto parts.

Various people will bid on them, I imagine they deal in wholesale recyclables but I don't really care to know. Expect to get at least $20 + shipping for 5 lbs of material, it depends on what type of car it came from.

Veg Oil isn't fuel?  Or not Meant to be?  Dude get a history lesson!  What did Rudolf Diesel design around.  Hint for the poorly educated, not dino fuel.  He wanted to run for peanuts.  Any ideas coming to mind?

Check it:  http://www.biodieseloflasvegas.com/biodiesel-history.aspx

My car runs great on it as long as I start on and end on diesel.  Now where can I press the peanuts I am growing?
