ok, so I have an 87 toyota 4runner, it currently has a 22re in it. I am HAPPY with the output of my 22re, probably around 120hp (high guess with tuning and flow upgrades)

fuel injection is so finicky and really does not like water on its electronics. I wouldnt mind a little more power, but would be ok if I didn't gain any. Right now I do not run A/C, but wouldn't mind having it later on. I currently run a low amp alternator, but have a 135amp gm three wire or four wire. Also thoughts of an on board air compressor, but this would only run when stopped, so power is of no issue there. I am looking for something RELIABLE and SIMPLE, literally an intake, an exhaust, the basic wiring and such, but I want it to look downright clean under my hood!

I really want to get good fuel mileage.

Look at what the VW engines are rated at, as far as horsepower and then decide. You would basically be cutting your horsepower in half, to install an n/a VW diesel.

I'd say AAZ 1.9 idi with performance upgrades, or M-TDI 1Z or AHU. Anything less and you won't make it up the hills. There's plenty of documentation for this swap, too.

well, it looks as though THEMAN? moved it to non VW, thinking that a non vw diesel would be better? is there anything out htere that you would rely on? that will still get good mileage

It is no big deal, but yes I moved it. I figured it would make more sense here.

Anyhow, I am looking into a jeep with a VW powerplant, look a few threads down *another reason I put it here, might have some info for you* And from what I have found the Jeep and Toyota share some bellhousing traits. I would think a very built 1.6 or a decently built 1.9 of IDI or TDI flavor would do you well. The HP from the toy engine is ok, but the torque of these diesels is where it is at. Since it isn't a direct swap I would recommend a VNT turbo with whatever you do as you will have the instant boost that will make up for any HP loss you may experience. I do not know what a 4 runner weighs??? I bet you will be fine if you like the 120 you are used to.

you are HAPPY with the 22r? then just leave it there.. those things are GUTLESS..

drive a STOCK 3VZ v6, then tell me you are happy with the WHEEZY 22r...

this comes from a guy that has worked on probably 100 different 22r/e's... ive even BUILT a few..

they SUCK.. even this one ^ sucked on the bottom end. gutless wonder.. my stock (intake, 2 passenger side exhaust manifolds, 88 injectors and ECU, few other things, basically stock) 1989 toyota 3VZ would annhilate that twin carbd 22r..

if you want ONE SWEET 4Runner when you are done. i got 2 words for you.

Mercedes OM617...

roughly the same power output as the 22r, but ALOT more torque. plus, they sound sweet ;)

You could throw a 2LT (Toyota diesel) in it.

I know some of us here don't like that engine but it was the engine that was in the Top Gear special where they submerged it in the ocean overnight and dropped it off a building and the engine still started and ran.

the 2Ls were JUNK..

the 2LT wasnt AS BAD, and the 5LT was finally a decent engine, so ive been told.

im still partial to the mitsu/isuzu diesels of the same time period, they were good engines. toyota was the only one who didnt have a reliable diesel engine. the SD22 was leaps and bounds better than the 2L..

ive seen only the non-turbo crack heads..

the turbo motors dont as often crack heads, from my experiences..

the few ive seen burn down, were n/a
