I would like to pick up another set of these in a boneyard and get some (SKF) bearings pressed in to have on hand for the inevitable front wheel bearing failure.
Am I correct in thinking that the late MK2 knuckle/spindle/hub with the larger ball joint is the same as the Mk3 ( the 4 cyl) up to 96?
nope.. unless it a 16v jetta... mk3 has caliper carriers that bolt on.. also has 10.1" front brakes...
mk2.. the caliper carrier is part of it and only allows for 9.4" front brakes..
are you talking late mk2 knuckles w/ 9.4s, or knuckles for 10.1s?
ive got a set of 9.4s that i took off my 92 Jetta 8v. there is atleast ONE bad wheel bearing..
i took off the 9.4s and swapped on some 10.1s off a 92 16v Jetta..
CRSMP5 is right.. the 9.4s are all one piece. the 10.1s are not. you also NEED 14" wheels to clear 10.1" brakes, beware..
i believe you CAN use mk3 stuff, but its going to be 10.1", and need the 14" wheels. your not running 13" wheels are you?
I am running 14s right now, but I have 13s that I may need to burn up and use eventually.
So, are you guys saying I would need to buy the MKIII brake assembly ( with the MkIII caliper) as well ?
Don't really want to do that, but that limits my options quite a bit. I have a set of knuckles off an '86 Mk2 that I could use, but then I would need to buy new ball joints and bearings. Why did they keep changing it...?

if you go with mk2/16v or mk3, you need EVERYTHING. like un-bolt the strut housing, the ball joint, the axle nut, and the brake line, and take EVERYTHING..
there is no single part that interchanges between 9.4s and 10.1s..
if you plan on running 13" wheels, scratch the 10.1" brake idea. cause they WILL NOT FIT. 13" wheels wont even mount up on my car, let alone mount up and rub on the caliper..
