Throttle shaft seal??
« on: June 10, 2012, 06:35:46 am »
So I'm kinda new to the whole diesel game, got a 97 Jetta 1.9td a couple months ago. Love it so far besides the gearing of the transmission and a diesel leak I got. IP is leaking, looked like it was comming from the throttle shaft. Ordered a seal kit and figured I'd pull off the top cover and do the o-ring. No big del I thought, even through I read through a few sites with instructions, I didn't mark the shaft vs lever correctly and somehow didn't get the springs on there correctly, it has 3 throttle springs. Those aren't even the major issue, when I pulled the pump top off, i seem to have no throttle shaft o-ring, no space on there for an o-ring, and no bushing in the top cover?!? Every bosche ve pump I've seen online has an o-ring to seal it. How do I stop the leak? It's back together for now, still leaking it drivable. Need to also find out the correct placement of the springs also. Thanks for any help.

There may be an o-ring so worn down that it looks like part of the shaft, but there must be a seal on the shaft, as every pump has one. I don't know if they ditched the bushing on later pumps, but it seems to me that it should have a bushing in there. Scrape along the throttle shaft with a razor blade with a little pressure. It should dig in where the o-ring is. If it's leaking, it must be replaced. Otherwise your IP internal pressure will be low and the pump won't advance properly.

every VE pump has a throttle bushing, and a throttle shaft seal..

EVERY SINGLE ONE HAS IT!!

without them, there would be a MASSIVE leak at the throttle shaft.

or, if it didnt leak, the throttle shaft would be a press fit into the pump top, and it would be VERY HARD to operate the throttle..

Thats why im at a loss here, maybe its so worn down that its gone?? Can i replace the throttle shaft? Anyone have a part number? What about my top cover? it definitely has no bushing in it. Throttle shaft has minimal play side to side.  i took a pic

never had a 1.9 before but isnt the layout the same as a 1.6?

in that pic aren't we looking at your governor arm going through the bushing that should be pressed onto the lid of your pump?

so push the slotted screw down and out of the bushing and there is an oring in there.

and that bushing should be pressed onto your lid, did it come out with ease or did you have to smack it with a hammer to get it to come out whole like that?

They're still available. Just take the bushing in with you since I see 4 different sizes listed.
Also if it came out easily, you may have a worn out pump top. Hopefully it's just the bushing that's worn, but you may need to be looking for a parts pump.
