Hey guys just a quik question, looking at buying a 1995 Golf 5 door with a 1,6 TD and was wondering what I might expect for a top speed. I'm sure someone here can tell me so thanks in advance.

depends on transmission gearing.
my rabbit with that motor does at least 170km/h but i have fairly long gearing.

As far as I know the car is bone stock but how would I go about finding out what gearing it has?

find the transmission code. on my car it was on a sticker by the spare tire well.
oh and by the way... you sure its not a 1.9L TD, or that its the original motor?

I'm almost positive the guy told me it was a 1,6TD, why should this car have a 1.9?
The Machanic who is selling it told me he rebuilt the engine about 80k ago and I have been told hes a very honest man.

^^ Because a 95 Golf TD should have a 1.9L not a 1.6L...
As for top speed... I guess it depends on how good of a condition the motor is in, and what u'r gearing is....
With my MKII I was able to do almost 170 km/h w/o a problem and could have gone more easy.... I've done 190-200 km/h in 90HP TDI powered VW's...
With an IDI, you might want to look into a few pump mods to help you get there a little quicker... the govenor mod will help you the most with u'r top speed, it made a huge difference on my and my buddies car

Mk3, 1995 , has a 1.9TD engine, if it's an 1.6, it's not the original engine.. It's easy to see if it's an 1.6 or 1.9.
You should have a 3.67 as R&P and an .71 or .75 as 5th gear..
Cheers,

Thanks guys I dont know why I had 1.6 in my head I know the car is original, and therefor a 1.9, and the engine only has 80k on a profesional rebuild. in the ideal world I would like to get at least 180kph out of the car (mainly because my friends civic shuts down at 170 and when I catch him I want to have a little extra) and from what you guys are telling me it doesent seem like coaxing that out of the car will be too much of a problem. Thanks for the info.

Do these professionals know about changing to a TDI crank sprocket?
might be worth having a look at the sprocket part number.

I would hope so but I will be sure check.
Any chance someone could get me that part number?
Any other important things I should check on the car, I'm young and this is only my second volks.

My A2 could go 70 MPH with a little more to go, and that's with a sheep in the intake, and (I'm assuming) a really old fuel filter.

Gotta test it once I get the shift bushings done and the oil changed.

I was able to get my 1.6L 10k miles on the rebuild 91 ECO Jetta up to 100mph with no problems, that was running 12psi boost and with a pump mod from Giles and a custom 2.5 inch down pipe and exhaust system back through a flowmaster muffler. It had more left but I was afraid of getting caught.

My 1.9TD would do 160-170km/h stock. It will do better than 190 at present, but I was on Q-rated snow tires so I chickened out. Transmission has been changed to 0.71 5th and the motor has considerably more power than stock. It will pull the taller 5th gear well into the redline. (FWIW, my 1.9TD pulls just fine at 4500+ rpm)

Thats awsome guys just what I need to hear. Now dont get me wrong I dont go around racing all the time. I am just used to something a little faster then my 1.6 NA . I grew up driving snowmobiles and ridding motorcycles so my old 1.6 though it runs good when i get off my snowmobile(130hp) and get in my car (52hp) well you can imagine what its like.
