1.6 GTD motor delivered today missing airbox
« on: February 14, 2006, 09:30:59 am »
My 1.6 GTD has just turned up on my doorstep, paid for yesterday, shipped 300 miles to my door in a day.  :D

Unfortunately the airbox (despite being requested and itemised on the bill of sale and delivery note) is not there.  :(

Now the people I bought the motor off were very helpful and gave good service - I rang them and asked, they said they were sorry and didn't have the airbox removed from the car before it was crushed.

To be fair, I asked if they 'could just chuck the airbox in as well' after I had paid and the bloke said 'yeah, I think it is still there'

So my question is, is it the same as / very similar to the airbox fitted to either the standard 1.6 TD or the 1.9 TD?

Cheers!

well yes, the engine is from a mk2 but to complicate matters, it's going in a caddy (MK1)

I'm most concerned with getting something that will match up to the several pipe coming off my engine.

I have the remains of the rubber pipe there and could run an alloy pipe down to any airbox I suppose.

But I'm guessing a diesel airbox is really essential. as a similar gasser version won't have the same filtration/ flow capacity???

ok thats the info thats important... mkI/caddy.

you'll need to find a turbo diesel airbox for mkI chassis. it will more than likely mate right up to the intake pipe from the mkII GTD setup. you need a mkI TD box... regular diesel, gas, or mkII won't fit without hacking.

should be easier for you to find over there. i've been looking for a mkI TD box for a couple years   i guess i need to get more serious about it.

Hey there...

I think you'll be searching for these parts from an A1 TD (not my car):

Here's a closeup of what the rear of the box looks like (also not mine):

The rubber hose is specific to the TD and I'm not sure if the A2 part will work or not there.  There's also a bracket that's used to hold the airbox to he inner fender as well. It's spot welded on, but I'm sure you could fab some small alu brackets to make that work.  I've got a pic of the stock bracket (it's actually Jake's) if you want to see it.  I don't think Jake will mind.

Anyway... FWIW, I have an "extra" hose and airbox for an A1 setup that I was saving, but you might be able to talk me out of it.  Drop me a line.

I've also heard you can use a carburated A1 airbox, but I can't confirm that since I've never seen one in person.  I did manage to find a picture though... (again, not my car).  I probably have that part number somewhere as well.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all your help, the A1 TD is pretty scarce over here too! I probably wont be able to find one.

Veeman - thanks for the possible offer  :)  but postage to UK may be a killer.

I may have to hack an A2 box to fit - even so the hose from my intercooled setup is pretty different to the more common non-intercooled A2 TD.

Not on a diesel never. I wouldn't even touch a K & N drop in replacement element in the standard box.

Nada nothing. Small film of oil. Normal.

The engine is running on synthetic oil and im doing 16 000 to 20 000 kilometers on the oil. The average consomption is 3/4 pint beetween oil change, so i don't need to readd oil.

The turbo is original, a Garett T2, wastegate was ajuste by me, 15 psi. And fuelling is ajust by me to. Tire is slipping until 4th gear

doesn't have much to do with your oil......has more to do with the grit making its way past the air filter. i've been running a k&n as well for about two years.....but i'm not happy about it
