89 golf outer cv gone. Fix or replace? Help please
« on: May 04, 2012, 01:20:31 pm »
ok im away from my computer posting from my phone. Its the outer cv on drivers side. Guy can get me a new built 100mm for 60 bucks, no core i think.  should mine be a 100mm on an 89 gasser? And 60 a good price? Outers are part of a complete axle right?  they dont have 90mm in stock. Please keep responses short and sweet cuz im on my phone.

That's too much money for one joint. Did your's totally fail or is it just ticking bad? Usually you can rebuild it and they'll last a long time.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

was a total failure! Car is dead in the water. The 60 is for a complete new axle! Probably EMPI but... I will keep old axle for spare parts! I am trying to sell the car right now so honestly im not too concerened about brand? Yeah i dont want to sell someone crap. But dont want to loose what little profit (if any) that im going to make on flipping this car!  wife will be getting a newer tdi soon and im going to build my 1,6 for another project

The boots on the $45 axles usually last about 30,000 miles before one of them tears.

if hes selling the car, they only need to last about 100 miles..

I've got around 70k on an empi shaft on my rabbit, all is good except that I have to change boots every winter.

Hey, the one that was in there, appears to have broke the cage, lost the balls, but the inner star and outer stub still appear to be in good shape, can you order a new bearing cage for them?

if it lost its balls and broke the cage, then its too loose.

those balls and cage shouldnt have enough play in them to escape the cup..

so, if it came apart, it was too loose, and nothing was going to save it.

even if they are worn soo much that they are loose, the CV joints still LOOK like they have no wear..

your eyes wont see a few thousanths worth of wear..

If you get a number off the cv joint and google it, you will probably get several other cars that it fits, it's held on with a spring clip so a good clout with a hammer will get it off. Car makers as a rule let someone else make these things.
