Im at a loss trying to get this thing off I have tried to make my own puller. Rented one from autozone. Hit it with a rubber mallet as hard as i can soaked it in pb. The thing just wont come budge. Does anyone have a puller they know will work that i could borrow and send back with postage paid by me??
your doing something wrong.......
ok here is the steps...
pull valve cover..
loosen cam bolt we will say a good 1/4-1/2" aka washer away from pully...
hit cam gear from valve cover side with ball pean hammer... UNLESS its got a cover between valve cover and pully.. then use punch thru hole..
walla done..
now on newer mk4+ stuff.. they lack the "hole" in the cover so require a puller.. unless you drill a hole in its plastic.. and pd up engines do not need a puller/hammer as well that cam is off the hook.. its got bolts and is unlike pre pd stuff..
I use a brass punch and give it a good smack, comes right off.
If you use a steel punch, the tool steel is harder than the pulley so it tends to deform the pulley but the brass is not as hard, so you can really whack it without cutting into the metal.
I have a punch that I brazed a ball on the end of, lol
