« on: April 28, 2012, 10:35:37 am »
How do i tell if i have one of those stage 2 poor mans lsd upgrades, withouth doing burn outs as a test.  Reason i ask is it looks like the transmission on my car has new case bolts and hardware and maybe seen a rebuild..  i dont want to tear into things and look for the shims etc... any ideas?

You could jack up the front of the car and spin a wheel.  If the other wheel spins the other way, open diff.  If they want to spin the same way, there's some form of posi action going on.

Found that out while servicing a LSD-equipped 90's Nissan hardbody.

the hard body LSD is actually a clutched LSD unit tho.. springs, clutches & steels, whole 9 yards..

the VW unit is not actually even a LSD unit, not intended to be used as LSD either..

if you put the trans in neutral, both tires will spin the same way, but if you kick it in gear, it will lead you to believe it has a hard to operate open differential..

even when you put the 80% mini slip kit, all it does is accelerate the wear on your copper conical washers, and the parts involved with that..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

If you are talking about the conical washers behind the axle cups, then every trans after 1984 has them. They give roughly a 20% LSD. But it cannot really be called an LSD, it just so happens to somewhat act like one.
