fml.
guess i gotta tear it back down. think i can reuse the gasket? or should i just get a new one? and i know ill need new head bolts. might just get studs like i originally wanted to.
ive successfully, along with a few others also, re-used head gaskets AND bolts, as long as you only re-use the bolts once..
i haven't even done the final torquing (after the first heat cycle OR after 1000miles) on them. i should be ok?
i would say that there is a good chance you can re-use them..

I would now take 1 bolt out of the hold down for the vacuum pump and spin the oil pump with a drill. Get a gauge to monitor actual pressure at the head and then at the filter flange if you can. Compare numbers, if both report 0 then you have more issues. If you have pressure at the flange but not the head I would start looking at the HG again.

unfortunately i dont have a gauge yet nor a way to spin the pump with a drill.
but like i said, with the sensor out it dribbles. barely anything. the oil filter does get primed though. and all was well before i did this work to it. i also replaced the oil pan gasket, and while in there, i made sure it was all clean when it went back together.

I used a 3/8" extension to a 1/4" adaptor to a 1/4" extension. I chucked the socket end of the extension into the drill and way at the other end of the mess put the 3/8" square opening over the oil pump drive. It may have been 1/2" drive to 3/8" but you get the idea. An oil pressure gauge can be had at most any parts store, and adapt it to m10-1.0 thread and you are good to go.
OR take off the head...

head gasket was on upside down.
thanks for the info guys. had NO idea that aftermarket gaskets wouldnt be the same as factory. Guess i should have inspected it closer before installing. Waiting for a new head gasket (will be here tomorrow) because im paranoid when it comes to reusing them. I think i'll be alright when it comes to the bolts as I never got to the final torque specs of them.

ive re-used gaskets with thousands of miles on them, without issue. yours didnt even get a full heat cycle, it would have been 100% fine, can just about guarantee it..

here's another question. how easy/difficult should it be to rotate the IP?
there's only 3 bolts that hold still, correct? two on the IP side and the one nut on the belt side?

Nope there are four bolts. Two on the top and the one that you get at from way back of the pump down low. And then the one up front by the belt area. I loosen them all when twisting on the pump and sometimes I have to break the nuts on the lines free as well to take the torque off of them. Should make that a practice anytime you twist the pump.

good to know. was under the assumption it was just the three.
Bad thing is i'm a mechanic. but this is the first 4cyl diesel ive worked on so its a learning process. But hey, it never hurts to learn new things!.
