do people not understand that VW autos are WEAK?

i swear im an ECHO over at vortex..

Jess (Rockerchick) and i have been beating our heads on the wall trying to convince people that the 01A is not a good trans to use when performance is in mind..

these are not turbo 400's for christ sake!

one kid just doesnt get it, so i posted this as my last response:

"like i said, treat your trans like GLASS WAITING TO BREAK..

those are WEAK trannies, even with a 2.0L 8v gas engine in front of them..

those trannies ALL DIE at some point or another. 200k is an ANCIENT vw auto.. most dont live to see 150k..

like i said, drive your car for what it is. if you want it to be anything more than what it is, save up the coin and do a 5 spd swap.

how many modded TDIs do you see still running the FRAGILE 01A automatic trans?

NONE!

know why? cause the trans SUCKS ASS, and there life expectancy goes down significantly with anything over stock power levels.

hell, like was mentioned before, even at stock power levels these things die OFTEN..

if you turn up your engine, your TRANS WILL BE DEAD IN SHORT ORDER.. not slipping, DEAD.

if that DOES NOT BOTHER YOU, then we can instruct you on all the cheap ways to kill your transmission, i mean, build power.. lol.. "

so, whats soo hard to understand? when you have MULTIPLE people telling you to NOT mod your TDI if it still has an auto?

is there something im MISSING HERE?!

did these transmixers mysteriously improve SIGNIFICANTLY because of some magical force?

cause last time i checked, and 01A was still JUNK..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

89 golf 1.8 digi, 1.6 na in pieces in the shop
I want an auto for my golf, lol, but also dont want to lose any power to an auto either, and dont want to be dealing with a broke trans.

I wish there was an auto that could still get you the awesome mileage and be reliable and all that

Why get so worked up over it?

This falls under the 'you can lead a horse to water' category. Give your advice and move on. Maybe in a few months there will be a built-out TDi for sale cheap, with bad tranny.

Seeing that everone  wants to "MOD their car " on the vortex , in my opinion , its just a load of highschoolers with extra cash from mommy and daddy. Once they spend over the 6 grand allowance they are given and mommy gets angry about having a car sit in the yard for 6 months, the project gets sold or parted.

Its an O1M in the Mk4s  ;)

But yeah, its stupid to mod an auto, unless you really don't care or are looking for an excuse to swap to a manual and you can't justify it without the trans being broken  8)

But that guy wanting to mod his auto is clueless about diesels to begin with. Sounds like a highschooler who just wants to make his car go fast and not caring about any sort of rationale behind it. He's gonna kill that car one way or the other...I can see it now. *facepalm*

But hey, like another poster said, maybe there will just be a TDI for sale for cheap with a blown auto. That's how we got ours! 114k on an '01 but just a blown O1M? SOLD! Fluid was nasty...completely black and smelled like death. Runs like a champ now though with a new timing belt and a 5-speed. Still want to break into the auto though and see the damage...
Mine - BMP 20thAE GTI
His - '01 Jetta TDI
Our project: '84 Jetta TD

Post 70's K(4x4HD) model  I think I lunched the forward sprag with a 160HP 6.2 driving normally.
the upside to the 400, my replacement was only $150.

Yep..  The post 70's 400's were junk.. Forward sprag being one of the things they cheapened.. Even worse behind a diesel as they shifted horribly with that vac valve thingy ma doo..  Fortunately they are cheap to replace/fix..
