CV axle bolts

Is the bentley wrong? am i crazy? or am i inept?

I ordered an m8 triple square star socket 3/8 drive as per the bentley and it absolutely doesn't work in the bolts. could mine be 6mm heads for some reason did some come that way?

There are 2 different triple squares IIRC one for asian and one for european cars. One is usually called a 12pt and the other a triple square, but at any rate one is smaller than the other. I bought mine off the snap off truck and had a bolt to check. He had both on the truck and I just got the one that fit. Then I replaced all of them with Socket heads and got a long hex drive as I kinda hate the 12pt stuff.

yep must have got the wrong one. guess it will go in the bottom of the box. I found a torx that works just as well. def replacing with allen head or hex.

If they are in there tough torx will strip it if it is the 12pt. Hex head won't work as they are too big.

On my refurb'd axles they came with new hardware, and they were allen heads.

VW takes the special XZN triple square bits.. im not sure what the other triple squares are, but i know the XZN 8mm spline drive bit works in all my VW axle bolts..

8mm XZN triple square (double hex) bit is the one you need for VW bolts, or else like was mentioned, you got allen bolts..

they're the 12 point for sure I got some of them out with a torx. going to get correct tool tomorrow with a bolt in hand to check it so its correct tool. replacing with allen head.

Make sure whatever you replace it with has a good shear strength, those bolts hold all the torque of the motor to the wheels.

no dude, get the right bit, if you didnt already mess up the bolt heads..

those are grade 12.9 cap screws.. they are the beefiest 8mm bolt ive ever seen in my life, hands down.

no allen bolt is going to be equivalent to the bolts already in there..

they wont be that hard to get.. worst case scenario, one of us can pull a set out of some old dead axles we have laying around..

i know that i have a PILE of old axles with worn CV joints..

What you all are refering to as allen head bolts are really socket head cap screws. Unless you are buying them at a hardware store all the socket heads I sell are 12.9 grade. I have stripped the 12pt stock ones with the correct tool and prefer the sockethead myself. Someone more than likely used a torx previous to me getting in there, but still, hardened sockets, preferably holo krome as they are all american made still or unbrako, is the only way I go.

8v, the last set I installed came with hardware too. They were socket heads and zinc plated...they suck. I don't think they are 8.8 grade as you can hear the difference in the steel banging 2 together. I kept them and used them in my turbo mockup project and was able to distort the socket in them with little torque. I kinda fear what some companies pass off as bolts.

i was thinking about just going to my local fastenal and see what they could get in for me in 12.9 socket cap bolts.
