Ruptured Fuel Shut Off Solenoid
« on: April 06, 2012, 04:49:23 pm »

Hey Guys, question here--is a ruptured fuel shut off solenoid indicative of a more serious problem inside the IP, or is it simply an isolated failure of the part?

I had replaced some seals on a pump that had been sitting for a while, put it back in and all, started fine, was idling when there was a loud pop and a small cloud of smoke. I thought something had snapped inside the pump. Tore it apart, (no damage that I can see) and was pleasantly surprised to find only the fuel solenoid had given up the ghost.

As you can see from the pics, it looks as though the plunger inside was less than happy, and perhaps seized, causing the plastic to fail?
I have ordered a new solenoid, but I just wanted to make sure that's the only thing wrong with the pump before I put it back in.

if the pressure regulator is not regulating internal pressure, then i could see the shut off solenoid blowing apart..

Blocksmith, I have got a fuel shutoff that you can have. And a gauge set up to test internal pressure that you can borrow if you want to come
get it. Should be about 20 miles from you. 1148 Mehaffey rd. 37931

RoR-- thanks for the pointer; looks like Chopper03 has offered to help me test your theory  ;)

fatmobile-- that's all it was; small puff of smoke, no fuel. Motor shut off immediately.

Chopper-- Thanks! I think I'll have to take you up on that offer  :)  I'll pm you here in a sec.
