For one thing you would have a hole in the gasket that would stick out of the head because it's a straight surface at that part of a mechanical head.

You would have a 1.9 headgasket on a mechanical head  :P

But yes there are extra holes in the 1.9 hg.  The smaller ones around the cylinders for cooling and the second oil passage. Wait that's if your putting it on a 1.6. Are there mechanical 1.9s I dunno lol

In any case I've read somewhere that the oil passage hole can be "patched"

i read a thread on vwvortex that mechanical engines are not compatible.
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3099455-Diesel-Turbo-Diesel-headgasket-upgrade-(1.9TD-headgasket)
So im a little sceptical.

He states that it's not suitable but he didn't say not possible.

As well things to consider, I've been told this several times by glegor is that your "mating surfaces should be almost perfect as the MLS hg may not seal as well as the fiber hg

I swear I read somewhere that this has been done.  Perhaps it was a different scenario

I did it on my build. I had 0 problems but I only posted 40,000 miles before the precup destroyed the engine. All mechanical block and head with the 1 notch aaz gasket. In my sig there below here is my build thread, but most of the pics are for some reason don't work anymore. Let me know if you need specifics and I will repost.

Why do you want to do this?
There is zero benefit to a stock or mildly modified engine and you end up with what could be a fussier head gasket, unless you also resurface the head and deck to the finer surface finish required for a MLS gasket.
