You can do the Inj Timing with dial indicator.
Like i did the AHU recently - iirc.

Can an apple machine have dual formats ?
One layer their OS, and one layer Microsoft XP ?

If that works, maybe you could borrow a cable in the mail from someone.
IQ and EGR duty cycle will have to be Vag'd.

So nobody knows about Shareware and VCDS-Lite ?
Looking for plain rookie english, not blocks and measures etc...

Yeah I suppose I could create a partition and install my XP on it. I have no idea on the VCDS lite. If I really need it the VAD link I posted earlier already has a wireless option. I "think" theirs works with any wireless device and it will probably be cheaper than the Ross as they don't even have a price range for it yet. I still have some time, but that is why I am searching now. I would have ended up with that piece of crap cable if I wouldn't have.

I don't think you can use a dial gauge on the ALH cars. The IP is different I believe. I don't recall seeing anywhere to hook up the gauge.

No, the pump gear itself is in two parts and is used to fine tune the timing. The pump doesn't move.

Yeah its nice being able to see the timing on the graph and have VAG-COM able to adjust IQ and stuff that way, but the dial gauge is nice. No need to button everything up and start the car (and get it up to operating temp!) before checking timing. You know right then. But I do love our TDI. Just shy of 53mpg with no real tweaking? Its better than our TD.

Thanks for clarifying on ALH, no-dial-gauge allowed.

I'd read about ALH pumps being swapped/swappable onto 1Z/AHU - thought they might have the same ability. o well damd shame
I'd do the reverse on that swappage if it was me. lol

The $16.50 cable package link you posted does say it reads TDI timing up through 02 or 04. If thats true (but i doubt it) might be worthwhile for occasional, or 1-2-3 time use.

Since used R-T cables hold value so high.
Could buy a used one - use it for what you need - resell for same cost and only be out shipping expense. I almost did this with the AHU i was working on recently.

I "might" try to get owner to go for an under $20 deal with 409.version and see what can be done with it. Thinking it might need or benefit from another IQ reading/adjustment after Intake and I/C are cleaned out.

Thats one reason i'm so curious about it (chinapop w/409.)
If it can do IQ on AHU, its better than the 70 mile roundtrip to GSO - time and fuel = X > $16.50

I haven't overlooked what 410 and Rally have said - but thirsty for more details about it. If possible.

No, rough timing is done at the pulley, fine tuning is done with VCDS.
If you pin everything  right, and put the pulley exactly where the bolts were, it will be like it was before you changed the belt.

I have done enough ALH timing belts to know how to adjust timing. Vcds cannot adjust timing. You have to physically do it. You can't just pray the new belt and tensioner and the play in the pins results in the exact same timing.

Maybe...I got it so perfect I didn't have to adjust the timing, It came out right at the advanced edge of spec, so I was happy.

You got very lucky, even when pinned properly slight changes in belt tension and pump angle and cam position can cause it to be out. There is some degree of play in each even when pinned, even when feeler gauges are used under cam lock. My guess would be if you checked prior to and after, it changed, just toward the good as most come factory retarded and we shoot for lightly advanced!
