K24 Turbo Question.

Ok, so i can buy a K24 turbo off of an Audi, 5cyl engine, i dont know if its the diesel or not. Now i have been snooping around the threads acquiring information about these turbos. And some of the information i found brings me to a question or two.
So i was wondering if this turbo is water cooled? If so, Is it possible to do this on a 1.6 td, or is it possible make this turbo fit the 1.6td oil cooled? Is this application going to be bigger, maybe smaller than the 1.6td application?
So I do have pictures so you guys can help me solve some of these question.

I'd say that's the gas version, as I've never seen a stock Audi diesel turbo with an external wastegate. You could probably run it, but it would laaaaaaaaaag! But hey why not, make an RPM-monster of it

when would think it would kick in? And with the external wastegate, what do i need to with that?

thats off a 5000 turbo quattro.. the external wastegate is the dead give away..
its a bigger K24 than the diesel one, so it will spool later..
i would try and find a 1.6 TD turbo.. it will bolt to a 1.6 manifold, that audi turbo will not..
im running an audi 2.0TD turbo on my 1.6, and it fits the manifold, but it had to be adapted to work right..
anyways, being that the k24 pictured is the non-wastegate version, you will have to keep an external wastegate, or else regulate your boost by fueling, witch is far from ideal..
my K24 is spooling nicely by 2000 revs.. i would imagine that this one would pick up around 1000 revs later, because they dont mae boost till almost 3000 on the 5 cylinder, so it would probably spool somewhat the same on a 1.6TD.. i want boost before 3000 revs, dunno about you..
that turbo is just all sorts of wrong for a diesel application..

they turn up all the time..
catlin may still have a turbo setup laying around..

yeah i just sold my old one, i wouldn't use that audi turbo, the kkk stuff doesn't seem to be as good at higher boost pressures, which is what we need with such small low revving engines, u can look for the vw t3 as well, or the volvo d24 t3, or buy some other used turbo, it depends what you want. if you're looking for only 15 psi there are many turbos that would work just fine.

I've read that K24s are fairly well for higher boost, I've seen people saying that they reach 20psi comfortably.
Also looking to possibly compound turbos, how well would a K14 and a K24 work, At this point im just considering things. I'm looking to put down some decent numbers, i want at least 90whp. I plan for more but thats defiantly later down the line when i decide on doing so work the head and possibly the block. How possible is it to hit 90whp with a K24 setup or other turbos.

I see, and yes i plan on builting a Td from the ground up. The only thing is that there really isnt much for these engines, performance wise from what i've seen.. i know there are upgrades, just not as many as one would want. To me this engine seems like its the unwanted one, due to the lack of upgrades. They must just think that these engine lack potential.
And with the compound turbo i figured the k14 would work because of the quicker spool, and the K24 seems big enough to throw some good boost. But like i said its probably not going to happen for quite some time. Just looking toward the future.

Ok, so im maping out my piping for my intercooler, and i need some specs on the intake and k24 turbo, what are their diameters of them? has anyone got a cross flow FMIC to work on a mk2? it looks like im going to have to rid of the A/C... not a real big fan of that. I could shim the whole rad back, but there is the alternator in the way.. Are there any other options for air control?

no its a aftermaket. 19" in length 6" in height 2.5" in width. Should fit without removing A/c but i think im going to remove it because i found an alternative source on A/C

do you know what an A2W intercooler is?
Air 2 Water..
meaning that water cools the charge air, not air flowing thru the intercooler core..
you mount a small, thin heat exchanger in front of the radiator, rather than a big, thick, intercooler..

No i did not know that, but thank you for the knowledge. I will have to do a little research, i was think it was a older intercooler that came off of a A2 or something.

So i assume they are very efficient.

LOL that AC setup is amazing. I cant believe I never thought of it
