My acc belt tensioner decided to blow up..
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:33:39 pm »
Which then somehow destroyed the belt and made it get caught in the timing belt possibly??

I was coasting through a parking lot at idle in 1st gear. When the belt snapped it jammed it up enough to stall the engine and stop the car dead on a dime. When looking at the timing belt, it would appear the tensioner has lost some tension..? and is now a bit looser. Maybe from having the accessory belt in between the pulley and timing belt?

I guess I gotta get over there (cars at the mall) and pull the valve cover and check the timing.

fml boys. fml.

Remember some of us calling you out on that no timing cover??? I hope all is fine and you get lucky. If not let us know, I am sure someone on here has a TB cover if you don't.

X2????
Hopefully all will be well. From what I have heard though TDI rods bend easily. Myke w on here bent rods by leaving his wrench on the crank bolt and turning it over...at least what he told me.

What in the heck happened???

Man, I dunno but the belt looks like it was about 80 years old and got thrashed to high hell.. It was brand new two weeks ago.

I do not think it bent the rods, as I went back to the car after it cooled off and turned the engine over by hand. Got a good compression/spring back on all 4 cylinders, with a wrench anyway. Checked the belt, and everything seemed fine, so I started it up. It was perfectly fine?? Albeit the idle is now really low and chugging.. but runs fine with the smallest fuel pedal input..

What do you guys think??

Tensioner exploded, I didn't think to capture a picture. When I was test fitting belts because i used a VR6 water pump pulley, i remember having to really crank the tensioner up to get it on the belt. Would tightening the bolt that physically holds the pulley to the arm cause a bearing failure? or was the belt just too damn tight? :(

roller failed in the tensoner from sittin...

i has vr6 pully on mine.. shimmed so it rides in middle.. i got my belt from myke_w need to go look at its size for ya.. but almost 8k later.. still perty... knock on wood...

id pull the crank pully... make sure no belt pieces got back there... ive seen it happen with normal v belts.. and serps are worse...

So i removed the crank pulley in the dollar store parking lot where my car has been sitting since sunday morning.. I was surprised someone didnt steal it to be honest.. Somehow then the tensioner gave out the belt was sucked up in to the timing belt cover and shredded, there was a load of belt crammed in to the lower belt cover physically lowering the idle of the engine.. WOW.

So I got that all cleaned up and a new belt on. I went with the next length. Which is now a 1055mm. It brings it almost down to the water pump pulley, but it takes a lot of strain off the tensioner.

They usually don't much, but I would watch it to make sure it doesn't stretch too much. Good deal on not being a paper weight.

Right so, an early TDI serp setup would work well for the older 1.6 diesels :)

as long as you make a 4th mount bolt solution.. no way ever do it with just 3 on a diesel..

me glad you pulled the pully... just rember that for next time.. it is enough to kill a diesel..
