020 oil capacity is 2.0L:  http://www.brokevw.com/020oil.html.

Make sure to use GL-4 oil.  I've never found a GL-4 only oil...I have always used GL-4/GL-5 75w-90 with no problems.

If you heat the area around the plug with a torch, I bet it will come out...

Red line mt90
I thought it was 2 qts
According to broke Vw
According to Bentley (something like this) - mk1 had a slightly different tilt to tranny
The 5 Spd would be correct oil level with the plug
Mk2 fill to plug level then pull speedo cable and add something like .53 qt
Or you could just pour the correct amount into the speedo hole
I thought it was 2 qts
Verify by comparing Bentley and broke Vw

ya this is in a AAZ 020 so its a late model.

problem with the bently is it gives no specific amount, it just says fill until it runs out the side hole, and if its an early trans put the plug in and fill a bit more (they do give a spec for that)

Its been told - that you can use the speedo gear as a "dipstick measure".
Half way up the gear mesh is supposed to be "A=OK".

I made one of the DIY tool bits to fit the plugs - from a bolt and 2 nuts locked together. Heating / hammer tapping / good tool bit should get it loose.

But speedo hole works too, of course.
Good Luck

i took a ring gear bolt (17mm head) and welded a regular m12x1.5 lug nut to it.. works GREAT. and the nuts never come loose off the bolt, since they are welded to it.. i used the double nut method at first, but the nuts kept coming loose before the plug, so i welded the nuts solid, and now the plugs come out every time..

I welded a cut down wheel bolt with the 17mm head into a socket. I hated the bolt wobbling in the socket, so that eliminated that.

Also, IIRC according to BROKE VW, you can check the site. For AAZ years of 020 it should just be fill to the level. The later year trans had a slightly higher fill hole so you didn't need to top it off at through the speedo hole. He has an identifying pic on his site somewhere.

i think it was any trans newer than 86.. cant remember the EXACT year they changed.. but the fill plug is VISIBLY higher on them..

got it figured, never got the bolt out, but put 2 quarts in, and was able to poke my finger down and feel the level by the plug. worked great

im assuming you filled it thru the speedo cable hole.. you can use the gear as a dip stick.. if the oil is half way up the gear teeth, your trans is full..

I also had a hard time getting the drain plugs out.  I ended up slipping an 17mm box end wrench over one of the wheel lug bolts and then put the lug bolt into to plug and tada!
