Oil seals

I'm planning on changing the timing belt on my 1Z, so I figured I may as well change/check the crank pulley while I'm there.  While I have that off, I may as change the oil seals on the front of the engine. 

I notice that this engine calls for Teflon seals.  I probably have at least 8 standard oil seals from my many years of standard gas and IDI VWs.  What's the deal with the Teflon seal?  I've read that it can be temperamental to instal and if you don't get it right, it'll leak. 

What's wrong with the old style, if anything at all?  I dont want to spend an additional $30, if I dont need to.

FWIW, I found a Vaico crank sprocket for less than $15 at bestpricecarparts.  I see the same part for $40 at worldimpex.  Best price doesn't have the stretch bolt, though.

I got a vaico sprocket and was horrified at the low quality. returned it immediately. C.R.A.P. IMO.

Really?  I thought worldimpex only carried quality parts.  Other than going to the dealer, what's a safe replacement?  Meyle, Febi, etc have all sent production to China (not that it's always bad), so quality will always be questionable.

i used teflon on my tdi-m build... after 2 screw ups on the intermediate shaft seal.. i used a normal one on it..

i highly suggest pulling the vac pump.. and using a drill to double check all seals once installed to make sure none leak..

I used a National seal on Int. Shaft seal - regular grade. (AHU)

There is an o-ring (viton ? - Green) on backside of seal carrier - get it too.
I didn't have the luxury of getting the o-ring locally when sourcing the seal - and reused the existing.

Really?  I thought worldimpex only carried quality parts.  Other than going to the dealer, what's a safe replacement?  Meyle, Febi, etc have all sent production to China (not that it's always bad), so quality will always be questionable.

I thought my supplier (worldpac) only carried quality parts as well, But I have returned more than a couple "OEM" brand products because of inferior quality. Lemme double check the brand of sprocket I have now..

no spring to fail on teflon seal... the crank/cam is easy due to taper shaft... but im shaft.. id only use normal seal...

im almost 8k into my life test of the teflon seals with no leaks still...

The sprocket I have now is an MTC...not a brand I was familiar with but the quality seems to be a lot better than some of the others I have seen.
