Can any tell me what the function of the red lever on the td pump in the pictures?
Can it be removed and/or is it required for proper operation?
TIA.

looks like a manual kill for a autotragic vw... aka cannot kill the engine via dumping the clutch.. so they had a manual lever..
my Peugeot pump has one of those also..
both manual, and slush-o-matic cars came with the red lever..
Yes, that lever can be removed but I only remove the inside part of the lever. It can actually limit fueling as well. I delete it by removing the pump top, cutting the lever off on the inside and leave the shaft in place to keep the hole plugged.

I'm not sure if this is true but I read somewhere that they only imported something like 350 TD 505s equipped with 5 speeds to the U.S. The rest were all autos.

what does that have anything to do with what i said?
my pump i have, is off a manual car, and my buddy has a WHOLE running/driving 83 505TD/5spd..
both pumps, well, all the peugeot TD pumps ive seen (not just 504/505) have had the red emergency shut down lever..
my buddies car is as stock as it comes.. never had a pump replacement, just re-sealed when the switch to LSD happened..
the rarity of peugeot 505TDs, is somewhat similar to the rarity of the Audi 5000 TD, if they really only imported 350 pugs.. in 83, only ~400 5Ks came TD powered.. i feel gifted to have one, even if it is a pile..

I was just commenting on the fact that they are indeed rare, but as I said, I'm not really sure if that number of ~350 cars is accurate. I was also alluding to the fact that it wouldn't make economic sense for Peugeot to build the auto and manual pumps to different specifications, considering how rare the manual ones were, although I suppose a lot more of them are floating around Europe, Africa, etc.
Also, that number is for Pugs imported to the U.S. that were turbocharged, diesel
and manual. There were a lot more manual 504s with n/a diesels and I believe a few thousand turbo-diesel automatic pugs were imported, along with thousands of gassers. That sounds like a cool car that your friend has, it's a shame they don't have much of a reputation in the U.S. because I really believe they are nice driving cars.

his pug rides/drives better than alot of new cars.. its VERY smooth, and its mechanically simple like our cars!
I have a friend with an old Audi 5cyl TD and IIRC its a 4000. Autotragic long been pooched (which is the condition he got it in)Sitting for the past 20 years hasn't done the body any good but the engine is complete.
