Marine Tachometer on Ebay
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:07:00 pm »
Hey Dieselers,

I'm looking at a marine tach on ebay for my 1.6 rabbit.

It says this:
This 12 volt, illuminated tach will work for 80-100/110-140/140-170/170-200 teeth diesel motors. It uses a 3 1/4" cutout and measures 3 3/4" across the face including bezel.

There is an adjuster knob on the back for those 'teeth' settings.  Will one of them work on the rabbit?

sounds like the tach in question is meant to read off a reluctor ring, and these diesels have no such thing..

Ummm, Flywheel teeth? that's how industrial stuff does it. it could be as easy as drilling a hole in the bell housing. Hopefully his flywheel has at least 80 teeth.

Yep :) Flywheels good. Forged in Germany, just put a new clutch in.

What I am looking for is a marine diesel tachometer for that W terminal.  Is there a specific one that works good? Any recomondations?   <=$50.00

The only problem with most marine diesels are that they are bigger 5 or 6 cylinders.. and they only spin 3.5-4k rpm.. So a tach from them wouldn't be too useful as we can spin our motors to 6k.

JDiesel, that "might not" have been a diesel specific tacho.

But anyway - you should find plenty diesel marine/tractor tachs on eBay that operate from an alternator signal. I used to find them for $40-60 new on eBay.

Well I'm trying really hard not to be out $40 on ebay... do all diesel tachs work on an alternator signal?

What about something like this?

No, some use a hall-effect type sensor, like a crankshaft position sensor on a gas engine or an ABS wheel sensor, with a ring that has teeth, often those are usually somewhat specific to the engine they're used on. I think optical sensors are another possibility but I've never seen this.

And some really old stuff is all mechanical, like a speedometer cable that comes off the engine.

Oh, and there some tools out there that measure RPM by the engine vibrations.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=diesel+tach*&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=See-All-Categories&_okw=&_oexkw=&_adv=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_ftrt=901&_ftrv=1&_sabdlo=&_sabdhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=200&_fpos=Zip+code&_fsct=&_fsradio2=%26LH_PrefLoc%3D1&_sargn=-1%26saslc%3D0&_salic=1&_saact=1&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_fsradio=%26LH_SpecificSeller%3D1&_saslop=1&_sasl=&_sop=15&_dmd=1&_ipg=200

There are several interesting ones listed.

You'll need to contact sellers and ask about alternator/generator signal - if its not listed in the auction. If they don't know - you might can google the part number/name of product and get more info.

Use   diesel tach*     just like that with the wildcard asterisk for search term. Then lowest price+shipping.

Check them all out - all the way to the end. Because sometimes there will be some cheap ones at the end of page due to shipping cost not being listed.

For example - like this one that comes listed at bottom after a $15,000.00 item.

here ya go.. idk why this cant be rigged up for under 40 bucks.. i did it for free.

http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=30442.0

after you build this setup, you can drive any aftermarket GASSER tach with it.. dont need diesel specific one.

i have NOT figured out how to make it operate a stock VW tachometer yet tho..

Wasn't jimbote running a standard VW gas tach?  Maybe the Ford sensor he used put out a stronger signal?
