gates timing belt??
« on: February 27, 2012, 07:03:04 pm »
the p/o of my eco replaced the timing belt with a gates brand belt. I've never heard of them and wondered what their level of quality is.

LOL, they invented the rubber/fabric v-belt, maybe you have heard of it?

Gates Corporation History

Charles Gates - Gates Corporation

Quote
Facts About Gates

When Charles Gates, Sr. bought The Colorado Tire and Leather Company in 1911 for $3,500, little did he know his small shop in Denver would evolve into a leading rubber products company. Colorado Tire and Leather made a single product, the Durable Tread, a steel-studded band of leather that motorists fastened to their flimsy car tires to extend their mileage.

From this modest beginning Gates Corporation, formerly known as The Gates Rubber Company, has grown into one of the world's largest manufacturers of industrial and automotive belts and hoses, plus a host of related products.

The company charted the course for its future success in 1917 when John Gates, Charles' brother, invented the rubber and fabric V-belt. It was a huge success and within a decade Gates established itself as the world's largest manufacturer of V-belts, a title it still holds today.

In the years that followed the company aggressively expanded its product line. Today, Gates serves customers in the industrial and automotive markets with a full line of belt and hose products.

ive had gates timing belts on damn near everything now, besides my 16v and diesel engines..

i wouldnt feel bad running a gates on a diesel or 16v tho.. i just treat them to continental, just because the chances of head damage if the belt breaks, 100%

The gates kit I put on my Kcar is JUNK.

Plastic tensioner, belt just wouldn't stay right on the cam gear. Switched to a dayco belt and put the stock tensioner on, and all was well.

I bought the OEM german branded belt for my rabbit. No parts store junk anymore.

First bad tale i've ever heard about a Gates belt.
Or maybe it was mostly the tensioner - lol - sounds like they gave you the wrong kit almost.

Now Dayco, thats the cheap shet.

Can get a Dayco Tbelt for 1.9 AAZ/AHU from Adv.Auto for $10
And it looks like a $10 Tbelt.
I think thats who makes Prothes Tbelts  :P

The k-car has never given me any huge issues, and is easy to work on and parts are dirt cheap. Can't say the exact same for my Rabbit.

Gates has different lines of belts, including kevler belts under their performance name. The kit I purchased was not from a discount auto store, the dayco was. Dayco (also an 'merican brand) looked to be a decent belt for the $$ and has worked for the past 10k I put on the car.

The kit was indeed cheap, at just under $50. The stock steel tensioner never really go's out, so it was my fault for buying the kit in the first place. Glad the car's easy a *** to time, and is non-interference.

I want one of these with the 2.5 Turbo I. It was available in a "High Torque" version, which put out 152 hp (113 kW) and 210 lb·ft (285 N·m) by allowing higher boost pressures at low rpms.

It'd be crazy quick!

Scratch that,

Turbo III

The Turbo III used a Lotus-made, Shelby-designed DOHC 16-valve head. Output was 224 horsepower (167 kW) and 217 lb·ft (294 N·m). This engine was used in 1,399 Dodge Spirit R/T and several hundred Dodge and Chrysler Daytona IROC R/T models in the US, Canada, and Europe, plus models including the Chrysler Spirit R/T and Phantom R/T in Mexico.

Cars using the 2.2T3 engine include:
1991–1992 Dodge Spirit R/T (North America)
1991–1994 Chrysler Spirit R/T (Mexico)
1992–1993 Dodge Daytona IROC R/T (North America, Europe)
1992–1994 Chrysler Phantom R/T (Mexico)
