Fubar'd speedo cable?
« on: February 23, 2012, 12:30:53 am »
So during my m-tdi swap, I do feel that I have broken my speedometer cable.. The classic "Oh crap i forgot to unhook that" as i was dropping the motor.

I'm guessing it stretched the cable a bit, but would that cause it not to work at all anymore?

ALSO! what colour gear was supposed to be in my 84 that came with the 4k trans? My car had the 4k trans factory, and the speedo cable was red geared.. It shows the red is for the 3.65 and 3.67.. so why was it in my 3.89??

In Mk1 -- and think Mk2 also , they had two diffy calibrated speedo heads.

On the face above or below the needle there is a number like 1340 or 1540 ,,, - i'm shooting this from memory. But that number is the calibration.

Thats how 2 cars with different ratio trannys can use the same color gear.
They would have 2 diffy speedo calibration numbers on their dials.

Between the different speedo gears - and the different gauge calibrations - it gave them a lot more flexibility/adjustability in production with fewer parts.

Very smart on vw's part. :)

What about the actual part that I may have broken it? :( Will stretching it break it ? The end didnt come off, or if it did the trans ate it quietly.. lol

if the plastic piece came off, the hardened steel gears inside the tranny will grant it a timely, silent death. If you still have that piece, I have a new cable sitting around you can have for the few bucks it takes to ship it.

I'll be pulling the cable out to check later today, I'll get back to you on that cable :). Thank-you very much.
