Leaking Hard Lines at Delivery Valves
« on: February 15, 2012, 03:31:39 am »
Any way to fix this?  I have them cranked down as much as I think they can reasonably bear.  They are centered...?

Is teflon tape an option with diesel?  That works for other compression type fittings.  I have it on some oil pressure gauges.

You should never use Teflon tape on a compression fitting. Teflon tape is for NPT.

You have to get a feel for those connections but if you are already passed tightning where it hits a wall, stop!  You just need to tighten them up until snug and then give a nudge with a wrench.

Sounds like you need to back them all off, check all threads carefully so you don't get crap inside the pump, clean everything up and make sure you didn't crossthread one.  No goop or stuff on the threads.

If your lines were slacked when starting and tightning they center right up, but if you have tinkered with a car with all the crap in place and the line supports you can see if pump timing was changed, etc. its easy to bind up the hard line and start off center and even possibly crossthread yourself into trouble :(

if everything is clean and mating right you should be able to hand snug them.

also try and look real close when things are running, is it possible that one of your delivery valves is seeping and whicking/dripping and tricking you into thinking the lines aren't mated and tight?

I will take a closer look at this, but otherwise the only other cause is simply that there is something amiss with the seating surfaces. The lines are well centered , clean etc.

I've got blue rtv on 2 injectors between the hard line cap and the injector. Cleared that leak right up. 20k miles now

I've used teflon tape to seal where the hardlines fit into the injectors.
ya'll can hate if you like but it works for a pretty long time.
1 only just started to leak again and it was because i took the lines off twice without replacing the tape.
IMHO it works pretty damn well. Don't need a ton. It fills the valleys in the threads and has so where to go when the diesel is pushing on it. Doesn't seem to disolve either.

The threads do not provide the seal, the tapers do. Make sure there are no burrs or debris on the tapers. You could try lightly polishing the tapers with some 2000 grit sandpaper.
