WTB: MK2 Turbo Diesel Exhaust Manifold
« on: January 15, 2012, 01:32:03 pm »
Hello all,

In the middle of an AAZ conversion in my 82 Vanagon and looking for an MK2 Jetta or Golf Turbo Diesel Exhaust Manifold to bolt up to a K03 turbo (kind of looking for that as well). If any one has one out there I would be most interested.

Thanks!

you wont find a mk2 manifold to bolt up to a K03 unless you build/buy an adapter..

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Yes, I have been currently running the 1.6 TD vanagon setup, same as the euro Quantum I am told.  This fits quite well but I am looking to upgrade for a bit of a better capacity turbo for the AAZ.  I am told that the MK2 TD manifold and a K03 will require a small modification to the drivers side motor mount to clear.

I am in Brooklyn, NY.  Would you happen to have a photo of the manifold and turbo?  I am still a little unsure if it will work with my setup.

All best...

Jason

the quantum manifold mounts the turbo low, and more to the front of the engine..

i remember the mk2 manifold DOES NOT FIT in a vanagon application..

Has anyone out here installed a turbo on an AAZ in a Vanagon?  I would be interested in hearing about what setup you used.  I seem to be getting conflicting information, you know...  4 diesel guys, 5 opinions...

search, our search function actually does work, unlike the vortex search..

its been done LOTS.. and from what i remember, people usually use the longitudinal turbo/manifolds..

i refer to the vanagon td turbo from europe is smaller then quantium.. so a quantium turbo would be bigger and a gain in boost.. but also a gain in lag..

myke_w who used to be a mod here did the euro set up in his.. i saw his in person...

what you seek is the turbo, manifolds, oil lines from a quantium td... as they never sold a td vanagon in the us... as stated the turbo on a vanagon was smaller then a quantium.. and the quantium is actually larger then mk1/mk2 td golf/jetta..

so that is what you will want to seek... just relize its size is a bit big and will have some lag..

now why others do not fit.. think the engine mount is in the way...

they never sold a TD Vanagon? in USA? maybe in canada? ive seen one before.. it looked STOCK.. or else the person who converted it, went to great lengths to make it appear stock 8)

Thanks CRSMP5.  Yea, I have the smaller vanagon 1.6 TD setup that i believe was either imported from Canada or Europe by the previous owner.  Due to a dropped exhaust valve I am replacing the motor with an AAZ and have been looking for a turbo setup to possibly upgrade to in the future.  We are going to retain the 1.6 turbo setup for now to get it back on the road but I was told that this setup is a bit restrictive on an AAZ.  Does the larger US Quantum turbo mate up to the same manifold as the Vanagon 1.6TD setup?

I am really not all too concerned with crazy performance so I am not looking to push it to its limits, just want to be able to hold 65mph on the road without stressing the engine beyond its comfort range.  I do have a 5-speed tranny so I should have the gearing to get me there, thinking about upgrading to 15" wheels in the near future as well.

Thanks for all the great info...

myke's looked show room stock... but it was a convert.. so yea.. people build them... and when money spent properly. are impressive to see.. but still slow.. LOL..

if you indeed have a vanagon td set up... yes the quantium turbo is direct fit.. now if its some other turbo set up.. no... how bout posting pics of what you have?

i still cannot do a vanagon.. weight too much.. and unimpressed..
