Shifter Relay Lever

You know the lever on the Trans that has two balls on it? Pushes the selector rod in and out?

SLOP CITY!!!!!!

I have a rebuild kit, bushings, arms, ball....................

New bushings.....................just as sloppy........................The bushings are rocking inside of the lever...........................EGGSUCK!!!! >:(

So, out comes the JB Weld. Clean up the OLD bushings (in case I have to drill everything out). And glued the flip out of them into the lever arm. Have you noticed that the area that the bushings go into is larger in the middle then at the ends? Anyway no slop now. ;D

Flanged Bronze Bushings   5/16" by 1/2" by 1/2" by 5/8" by 3/32"   id-od-oal-fod-ftl.

abs bushushings has a part number of fb-58-4 price unknown at this time          usps priority mail shipping of 10 USD

Wonder what I can find at the hardware store?

Any other thoughts on this?

Can you show a picture of what you are talking about?

My pieces were falling apart when I got my car home, couldn't even find all the gears.  I rebuilt everything from the engine bay into the actual shift lever box where the rod rides on a bushing kit, and then the lever inside has a reverse lockout kit that was worn through the bottom.  Then make sure the lever itself has meat on the white part that contacts a rivited white piece on the box, watch its motion.

Then I spent the money on an aftermarket missing linkz kit I think it is.  Adjustable linkages and upgraded versions of various bushings.  That required me taking the bracket out of the car to drill a rivet and bolt some other pieces on.  And where the old ball was I installed a nastier rubber like bushing and had to slightly smack the retainer with a hammer to just get it to hint at touching the walls with some lube, not tight so things had trouble moving.

I used the tool to adjust the locknut thing on the shift lever and it took a tiny bit of adjusting of the kits because they aren't shaped exactly like the stock kits.

What do you know, I have no issues getting into all the gears.  2nd gear don't grind.  Reverse is down :)

The only fixin I have had to do on the shifter mechanism is replace the bushings on the lever that connects between the solid shaft coming from the shift lever in the cab to the multiple rods connected to the transmission itself.  That vertical rod with the two major bushings was worn real bad on mine.  I hit the hardware and picked up a couple brass ones that fit just right on the OD but had to be filed a tad for the proper ID.  Tightened it all right up snug.  Still thinking about weighting the shift mechanism or going UKART.

many years ago.. id wrap those bushings in electrical tape till it fit the holes nice and snug.. theory is the verticl bolt and bushing is the moving spot.. not bushing in the "relay lever"

the part i think he speaks of is the lever between the 2 plastic rods..

I bought this after installing the missing linkz shifter kit and still had slop. This made it much better, but the total fix was to have EVERYTHING done. I dropped the exhaust and did the shifter relay ball. Now it is all good, shifts tighter than the new TDI car I have. Fatmobile IIRC did a thing with the relay ball and put in a bearing of some kind, but I didn't understand it so I just did the relay ball. I think the worst deal with my shifting before the start was the relay ball and the white plastic piece that pulls for 5th or is it reverse. It was the shortest white plastic piece and it had a crack in it that would let it stretch so it was really sloppy. Good luck. Pics would be an easier find for me if you had them.

This is on the Mk-1 020 trans. Bently calls it the relay lever. Manual Trans [Sec 8]. Page 7.   Fig.3-4.

Now with the old trans out,  ITS CLEANNIG TIME!!!!!  8)   oh  joy

The kit will give you everything but I suspect that you need the bushings and the ball of that relay shaft and the shift rod bearing assembly...BUT you said you did all that???Maybe the relay shaft is worn? Good luck

Kind of the lower left center of the diagram, just right of the blowup of the selector lever with two balls on it. The part I am dis-cussing has two arms (one longer than the other) with a ball on each arm. It's bracket bolts to the trans.

Am going to have to start a new post for the next thought (spelled THUNK!)  Short shifter mods.

I had the same prob. I ordered the bushing and bolt and found the bushing moving in the mount.  I cut up a coke can and shimmed it tighter round the outside of the bushing.

Then I found play in the ball links so I put plastic film over the ball before I pressed the plastic cup part on, now it is tight!

Just saw on eBay a bushing setup that had a middle filler shaped to the inside of the lever.  24 USD plus shipping.
