Annoying Noise from the Fusebox >:-(
« on: February 06, 2006, 08:16:09 am »
Hello!
I'm having this problem, lately, and am getting a bit mad  :x
The thing is; Sometimes (mostly when the engine is still warm) when I turn the battery on, theres an irritating noise coming from the fusebox!! I don't know what it is, but as I turn the engine on, the noise just shuts after 1 or 2 seconds!
And the car runs great, starts allways well. No apparent problem with the motor, I think..
Maybe it's because the air humidity (although Winter here, is by no means as rough as it is over there in NA), I don't know...    but there seems to be some problem with the electric/electronic circuits! :?

What can it be?!! Does it seem serious!??
Would appreciate very much some help!

Golf II 1.6TD (JR) and the oil and coolant levels are fine, btw

What kind of noise? buzzing, squeaking, beeping, rattling.......  There's alot of relays down there that could be making noise.

Yes, buzzing! That's it! Almost like a cricket
I've been told it could be some relay, indeed...  :?

keep doing whatever you do to make it happen, but while one relay is removed. if that doesn't stop it, replace relay and try pulling another until you find the cricket.

When you say "turn the battery on", do you mean turn the key
until the glow plug light comes on but you have not started the motor
yet?  If so it most likely your glow plug relay.  Either it is going
bad or you have some bad connections somewhere.  Start by checking
your grounds.

My vanagon does this from time to time and I know that it has
bad grounding connection that I have not fixed yet.

there are a lot of relays that it won't be, so you can narrow it down quite a bit.  My first guess would be the glow plug relay.  So remove that one and see if the buzzing stops.

Yes, that's it! But the buzz sometimes happens even when the engine is still warm, so the yellow LED doesn't even get to light! U know wot I mean?
There are other times it buzzes, being the engine cold..

You should be able to get under the dash, and feel for which relay is buzzing when it happens.

The glow plugs are on longer then the LED indacates.
And the glow plugs can be on with the LED off.  Sounds to me like
it is your glow plug relay, now the question is why is it buzzing.
Bad grounds? bad relay?  You need to do some checking.

pulling out a relay is as simple as pulling a power cord from the wall, give it a try!  :)

U know, it doesn't really happen everytime I turn the key! Only sometimes.. few times..

It happened once or twice (a year ago or sumthing) while driving!!!      And never more! I think it was the same buzzer, but...  :? !!

Anyways, as I said I haven't noticed any suspicious fault in the engine itself for the effect (not then, not now..), that could cause this. So the problem really must be electric!  :?   :?:

And would it be safe to do this with the battery on? Couldn't it damage anything?!

i don't see any problem with it, and have done it many times on many mkIs and mkIIs. it would be similar to a relay or a fuse in the system burning out...

if you're concerned by having the car on while doing it, try removing/installing the relays while its off.

i just had a similar buzzing and my signals stopped working properly so i was fairly sure it was the signal relay. my guess for you would be signal relay or glow plug relay. the signal relay has 3 prongs, the glowplug relay has many more including a couple labelled 85 and 86 if i remember correctly.
