ignition switch 82 rabbit
« on: December 24, 2011, 05:17:30 pm »
My 82 rabbit diesel has the key broke off inside of it. It is almost broken half way in (don't ask me how, it came this way). I have had luck getting broken keys out before but they where closer to the top. I have a pair of needle nose pliers with the tip ground down really thin to get to them. Can't do that on this one, any other ideas?
Is there a way to remove the lock cylinder without taking the whole switch off the column?
Thanks

can you slide a coping saw blade next to the key piece?  Push it in so that the teeth are grabbing the key on the way out.  That way you pull on the blade with a pair of vice grips and have some leverage.

bently tells you how to get the mechanical part out... takes me under 30 sec..

once out if you knock the roll pin out.. twist then the whole piece with tumblers comes out... will need to stick you r2nd piece of key in to turn it.. then a dental pick from the back will take rest of key out..

but i will not tell you the30 sec trick via a forum.. i feel you need to read up as well its part of how to steal a vw in under 60 sec stuff that should not be posted online..

Is the 30 second procedure destructive?  I think not else you wouldn't use it.  Time to go Google it.

I don't have a Bently but I did find a file on the net about taking two measurements and then drilling. Then you use a pin to lift a spring and the core comes out. Is this what you are refering too? I have a replacement switch but thought if it was easier to use that trick I would. I can pull the steering etc. to do it but saving time is what I am after.
Message me the info, I won't tell anyone :-X

pre 88 ice pick vs drill... its that thin... and you press in on the clip (spring as you call it.. its a spring clip that locks it into place.. ).. not pull out.. with said icepick.. 88+ requires drill.. and one of the hard to find 12" long 1/8 one keeps you from taking any of the rest apart..

next.. need only 1 measurement.. the other is in line with the key slot.. just need the how far back down the pot metal to go..

yes its undestructive... so simple you can take a different lock assembly stick it in and drive away with key..

again a experianced person like me.. 30 sec.. and thats 20 sec of removing the clamshell..

in 88 they thickened up the piece you hit with a ice pick.. so has to be drilled.. but same exact place.. in line with the key slot..

Well, I drilled the replacement switch I had to see what it was all about. Very straight forward and fast. The only problem I ran into was not being able to get to the top side of the switch in the car. Couldn't figure out how to remove the top plastic piece. Anyway, I just drilled from the bottom into the slot and used a thin flat piece of steel and it opened up the spring with ease. Man, that was a time saver. Thanks for the info. Still took less than 30 min and that's for a newbie. Now that I know what to do, probably 5 min job. I don't plan on practicing for speed since I don't plan on being arrested ;D
