Speedo Screw Removal

Any GOOD way to get the darn thing out?
And once I get it out, repace it with a hex headed bolt? (Screw is a 7-1.25x 12 mm..........NOT finding a bolt with that pitch!)
Drill and tap to 8-1.25mm?
Someone else manage to bugger up the #3 Philips head royaly!
Have new Trany waiting to go in, if I can get this screw out!
Hair is too short to get a good grip on
... I would have no hair if it wasn't.

You could grind it off and pull the speedo out. Then get on it with some vice grips. I never did understand the 7mm deal, I wouldn't think drilling and tapping it out to 8 would hurt the structural integrity of the trans or hurt anything at all.

Soak in penetrating oil or some brake fluid and then punch it and drill it out with a reverse drill bit. Once it gets a bite on it the drill might torque it out. A tip from my son who has the money to have a set of reverse ground drill bits just for this purpose.

i use a impact driver.. long extension.. but on it.. hit real good with hammer and twist while hitting..
now bolt.. if all else fails.. the one on the bottom.. there 2 of them 11mm heads.. that hold the tin in place could be used..
usually though i end up buying a longer (smallest i can find) bolt and a nut on it to screw down to hold it in place.. aka the bolt too long, dead ends into its blind hole.. nut used to hold speedo cable in..
drilling speedo cable for bigger bolt will be a serious pain.. and drilling/tapping tranny would suck too..

New Trany is sitting on bench, Drill and Tapping not a problem.
Impact driver.......I have one, just need to see if I have enough 1/2" extensions.

Impact driver- good way to go. My experience with most of the nuts and bolts on my Rabbit is that they need a sharp guick turn to break them loose and then for most of them I can remove them with my fingers. So cracking it off seems to be the key rather than trying to slowly muscle it off.

I am going to try and get up from the under side with some vice grips..........................
If that does not work, I will drop everything down to where I can get a cold chisle and hammer in there and get it turning that way.
All else fails, Drag it out with the speedo cable attached and do the drill trick.

If this is a rabbit just take it out with the speedo cable attached. If you remove the lower dash panel you should be able to sneak your hand up there and unscrew it from the gauge cluster. It's the easiest way. Though I have never had a problem getting those screws out. I always forget the speedo cable when pulling a tranny and don't remember until I can't figure out why the tranny won't drop.

early mk2 is even easier.. you can disconnect the cable from the o2 sensor counter box, and pull the trans..

wow, that was a real dirka dirka moment on my part..
you gotta be kidding me? no o2 sensor counter on cars without o2 sensors?

81-84 bunny had them built into the speedo.. people say gotta take apart to reset.. but much like how to remove a mechanical part for ignition switch a simple piece of coat hanger made up takes 2 min max to reset.. just gotta know too..
so they just have 1 long tranny to speedo cable like a diesel..
im thinking mk2 they went back to the box in pa..
it sux working on them when new.. and rembering what a new one is like.. thats simple crap i did when i was 10 and younger..

so did all the early mk2 cis cars have the 2 piece speedo cable and counter box then? all my CIS cars have had, and all my later mk2 digi cars, they dont have one, IIRC..

88 they killed it... no more o2 light...
i cannot say ive seen a pre 88 mk2 gasser golf in so long... jetta had the box... but for the life of me golf.. no idea.. but i am assuming they did.. think the clusters same as jetta even though the dash is 100% different in how the trim and all is.. aka surround that hold the switches and all is not the same as a jetta.. me allowed the 3 year brain fade.. i hate mk2.. LOL..
